An OdeA
Luce intellettual piena d' amoreB
-
-
PreludeC
Lo the spirit of a pulsing star within a stoneD
Born of earth sprung from nightE
Prisoned with the profound fires of the lightE
That lives like all the tongues of eloquenceF
Locked in a speech unknownD
The crystal cold and hard as innocenceF
Immures the flame and yet as if it knewG
Raptures or pangs it could not but betrayH
As if the light could feel changes of blood and breathI
And all but human quiverings of the senseJ
Throbs of a sudden rose a frosty blueG
Shoot thrilling in its rayH
Like the far longings of the intellectK
Restless in clouding clayH
-
Who has confined the Light Who has held it a slaveL
Sold and bought bought and soldM
Who has made of it a mystery to be doledM
Or trophy to awe with legendary fireN
Where regal banners waveL
And still into the dark it sends DesireN
In the heart's darkness it sows crueltiesO
The bright jewel becomes a beacon to the vileP
A lodestar to corruption envy's ownD
Soiled with blood fought for clutched at this world's prizeQ
Captive Authority Oh the star is stoneD
To all that outward sightE
Yet still like truth that none has ever usedR
Lives lost in its own lightE
-
Troubled I fly O let me wander again at willS
Far from cries far from theseO
Hard blindnesses and frozen certaintiesO
Where life proceeds in vastness unawareT
And stirs profound and stillS
Where leafing thoughts at shy touch of the airT
Tremble and gleams come seeking to be mineU
Or dart like suddenly remembered youthV
Like the ache of love a light lost found and lost againW
Surely in the dusk some messenger was thereT
But haunted in the heart I thirst I pineU
Oh how can truth be truthV
Except I taste it close and sweet and sharpX
As an apple to the toothV
-
-
IY
On a starr'd a still mid nightE
Lost I halted lost I gazed aboutZ
Great shapes of trees branched black into the skyY
There was no way but wandered into doubtZ
There was no lightE
In the uncertain desert of dim airT
But such as told me of all that was not IY
Of powers absorbed intent and active without soundA2
That rooted in their unimagined mightE
Over me there ignoring towered and spreadB2
Homeless in my humanity and drownedA2
In a dark world I listened all awareT
And that world drew meC2
The shadowy crossing of the boughs above my headB2
Enmeshed me as with undecipherable spellsD2
The silence laid invisible hands upon my heartE2
And the Night knew meC2
-
She put not forth her full power well I knewG
She only toyedF2
With reason used to sunshine flatteriesD2
The praise of happy senses trusted trueG
And smile of stable Earth's affirming easeD2
Yet even in this her ante room I feltG2
Near me that voidF2
Without foundation roof or bound or endH2
Where the eyes fast from their food the heavenly lightE
The untallied senses falter being deniedI2
The mind into itself is pressed is pennedH2
Even memoried glories of experience meltG2
Into one mapless eyeless elemental NightE
It was so nearJ2
That like a swimmer toiled in a full streaming tideI2
Drawing him unawares down the unsounded seasD2
My soul sank into fearJ2
-
O for one far beam of the absenting sunK2
O for a voice to assure me and to releaseD2
Out of this clutching silence There is noneK2
Shadow on shadow and stillness on stillnessD2
Enclose me and fasten roundA2
Is this a world which Day never has knownD
A world made only of doubt and dream and dreadB2
Is this the interior Night of the dark human soulL2
And the immaterial blackness branching from the groundA2
A fearful forest that itself has sownD
Against the stars to towerN
Stars that dispense their faint uncertain doleL2
Of light that darkness may the more aboundA2
Whither am I come Where have my wandered feetM2
Brought me on circling steps led by what furtive powerN
Alas in this dumb gloom wherein my spirit gropesD2
Only myself I meetM2
-
Only myself but in what strange imageN2
Encountered and phantasmally surprisedO2
This thing of stealth that rises from the shrouds of sleepP2
I know it I with shuddering guess presageQ2
An enemy the native of the nightE
That in me was disguisedO2
Hollow echoing caverns where blind rivers creepP2
With soundless motion ice cold sudden breathI
Of climbing cloud at whose abstracting touchR2
The upholding rock seems baseless as the mistS2
Black silence in the eagle's captive stareT
Empty of all but the baulked lust of deathI
Could not oppress so muchR2
Even that which in the dark brain says I am ''-
Desperate in its faltering to persistS2
Flickers like an expiring lamp's last leap of flameT2
To leave me I know not whereT
-
Let not the beautiful world perish and ceaseD2
My heart cries freezing in its secret cellsD2
Let me not be extinguished in the abyssD2
Losing the bless d touch and taste of thingsD2
Earth's heaven of hues and smellsD2
I am so far from worlds where any fountain springsD2
Sunken into this placeless dungeon dreamU2
That holds me without wall or roof or doorB
The light is only legend I beginV2
To give away my being like a streamU2
Wandering among unshapen shapes that spinV2
A world of unintelligible dreadB2
And this world seeks me for its ownD
All is dissolved nothing has meaning moreB
Each moment heaps an age of time above my headB2
It is the very Mind of Darkness I am inV2
Lost and alone aloneD
-
-
IY
The Forests of the Night awaken blind in heatM2
Of black stupor and stirring in its deep retreatM2
I hear the heart of Darkness slowly beat and beatM2
-
As if Earth shrouded dense in gloomW2
Shuddered in her guilty wombW2
As if a power from under earthX2
Would bring some monstrous spirit to birthX2
As if a spirit ran pursuedC
And sobbing through the shadowy woodY2
Ghostly throbs of sound beginV2
To circle from the distance inV2
A phantom beating dulled remoteZ2
With madness in its fever noteZ2
-
I know not what about me or what above me oppressesD2
The suffocating air but fear within me guessesD2
A peopling of the caverned glooms miasma cold recessesD2
-
Leaves depending still stillS
Bronzed to blackness spillS
Dead light from a sinking moonA3
Wholly to be sunken soonA3
Wandering down a desert coastB3
At the horizon's end a lostC3
Eternal exile from the DayH
Whence she stole a perished rayH
That falls from off those fingered frondsD2
Black as vipers cold as bronzeD2
-
O is it from my heart or from the darkness roundA2
The far reverberation the dull throb of soundA2
A pulse a fearful pulse in air or undergroundA2
-
Closer quicker through the heatM2
Drones insists the incessant beatM2
Round in shuddering circle comesD2
Beat on frenzied beat of drumsD2
Nearer in from every sideI2
Thudding madly multipliedI2
To seize the heart and blind the brainD3
With a monotone insaneD3
Terrible terrible in continuanceD2
It holds me fastened in a tranceD2
-
O for a spirit that is not mine to bearT
This weight of the unfathomable nightE
O for a spirit of more than mortal mightE
To take upon him this my loadA
Of infinitely wide world quivering fearJ2
O for a Demon or a GodE3
In saving presence to appearJ2
-
What is it that my eyes amid the gloom divineU
There in the furtive filterings of the ghast moonshineU
What bodies sway and cry and to the ground inclineU
-
The fear that held me falls apartE2
But leaves a horror in my heartE2
Stony stony of blank stoneD
Fixt on that secret altar throneD
Inhuman human Shape with hands on kneesD2
With remote stare that nothing nothing seesD2
Yet is a magnet to a thousand eyesD2
A thousand forms that crouch scenting the scent of bloodF3
Beat breasts and writhe before you with ejected criesD2
Unbrothered beast abominable GodE3
Who made you and shaped you into more than breathI
Can give a will to What power drove the handG3
With terror strong as lust to shape you thereT
Immovable as DeathI
And carve the rock of darkness in the mindH3
To horrible resemblance of my kindH3
Lost Light sunken LightE
From what I am save meC2
The fever beat of sound is in my veinsD2
I breathe the black blood smelling airT
The ecstasy of fear the blind throb in the breastI3
I share it I must shareT
It is not I I cryY
Yet it is IY
These are the powers that crave meC2
This is the full dominion of the NightE
-
The victims ah the victims shriek and dieY
And on them the eternal Idol staresD2
But they have made him incense of their prayersD2
Voluptuously have knelt before their ownD
Black terror bodied into stoneD
Not the expiring cryY
So lacerates my mind while without endH2
Through ages up the altar fumes ascendH2
And fading into shadow from their bodies rentJ3
Stream spirits without number to conceiveK3
But this O victims this that you consentJ3
That you believeK3
-
They were all human My heart falters howL3
That infinite bond refuseD2
Like last reverberations of a bellM3
That in their ebb and last expiry tellM3
Of stupefying clamour when it heavedN3
And shook its tower to the foundation nowL3
Whispers out of the dark accuse accuseD2
I have consented I have believedN3
-
-
IY
There is singing of brooks in the shadow and high in a stainlessD2
Solitude of the EastO3
Ineffable colour ascends like a spirit awakingY
Slowly Earth is releasedO3
It is dawn it is dawn the light is budding and breakingY
-
Earth is released flowing out from the void of the darknessD2
Into body and bloomW2
Flowing out from the nameless immensity night where she waitedF3
Myriad forms to resumeW2
Gloriously moulded as if in her freshness createdF3
-
The lineaments of the hills serene in their orderN
Arise and the treesD2
With their motionless fountains of foliage perfect in slumberN
And by lovely degreesD2
The blades of the grass re appear minute without numberN
-
The rounded rock glistens and warms where the water slips by itP3
Familiar of oldM
The tree stretches up to the air its intimate branchesD2
Bathing in goldM
And the dew dazzle colours in fire the lichen it blanchesD2
-
Each is seen in its beauty of difference deeply companionedM
Leaf root and the stoneD
And drawn by the light from their dream in earth's prison emergingY
Distinct in their ownD
Form from the formless a million natures are urgingY
-
I see them I know them I name them I share in their beingY
I am not betrayedM
I feel in my fibre the touch of a spirit that knows meC2
For this was I madeM
In a world of delight and of wonder my senses enclose meC2
-
Whence come they the water brooks Out of the mountainous darknessD2
Where no life is seenQ3
From caverns of night are they come but because of their springingY
Meadows laugh to be greenQ3
And hearing the voice of their carol the children go singingY
-
The children go singing they read in the books of the LightM
Things hidden from the sageR3
Unschooled are their bodies that run like a ripple and fear notM
Coming of grief and ageR3
The sighs of the night the doubt in the shadow they hear notM
-
Lo single mid grasses a flower upspringing before meC2
In delicate poiseD2
Takes the light like a kiss from an innocent mouth as it quiversD2
Confiding its joysD2
To the air and my heart from its prison of self it deliversD2
-
I stand in the dew and the radiance my shadow behind meC2
Lost out of thoughtM
The bright beams ascend and ascending from earth they uncoverN
The secret they soughtM
Enter me make me afresh O Light my loverN
-
-
IY
Why are these beams so twined with sweetness and with painD3
Injury and anger fear and all desireN
Whose purity should stream through pulse and brainD3
Not thickened in dull fume or frayed with fireN
But absolute and wholeL2
Into the central soulL2
Disclouded from those lures and all their trainD3
Knowing what is and is not white and bareT
As the bathed body quit of day's disguiseD2
But the only truth is coloured with the secret stainD3
Of our mortality that unawareT
Infects the farthest vision of the eyesD2
And region of invisible thought Vain vainD3
That throbbing search The LightM
Is more profound more secret than the NightM
-
Who has built an airy mansion for the unresting mindM
To inhabit and rejoicing contemplateM
A many pillared universe designedM
In order clear complete and intricateM
Intelligible wonder notM
Too vast to hold man's lotM
But he has waked on some malignant morn to findM
The certainty too certain to be trueG
Distasted and that palace only a mazeD2
Wherein he wanders and is still confinedM
The pillars of it fallen and no clueG
But through the ruin penetrates a blazeD2
Of glory beyond glory and of light behindM
The light and the strength fails in him he knowsD2
Himself lost in a world that overflowsD2
-
Yet no power stills the ache or stops the springing needM
The dark creative spiritual DesireN
Seizes upon his heart which holds that seedM
And straightway till the last of breath expireS3
Like tool upon the wheelT3
Sharpened the more to feelT3
He counts all else waste honour wealth a weedM
The burden of the beauty is too greatM
The eternal mystery in the heart a woundM
Until his vision in the end be freedM
Until he has spent his all to incarnateM
An airy spirit upon earthly groundM
Forms for a God to dwell in and exceedM
This fading flesh Alas from godlike shapesD2
Some yet diviner essence still escapesD2
-
O that the form which once kindled to ecstasyC2
The rapt gazer and freed him should becomeU3
A cold thing to appraise with leisure's eyeY
A beauty disinherited and dumbU3
Whither is the spirit flownD
From the forsaken stoneD
That seemed our sunken selves to deifyY
O that the thought the word which into the heart leaptM
Pregnant with light and troubling even to tearsD2
Should fade and wither should grow old and dryY
By repetition dulled upon the earsD2
Like cheapened courtesies the lips acceptM
And falsehood custom cares not to denyY
A scumm'd and stirless pool a frozen rutM
A path deserted a door shutM
-
But that the life should be less living than the deadM
This is the worst that perfect form and wordM
Should perish of perfection yet be fedM
With incense still and duteously adoredM
A name prostrate the throngY
The presence moved amongY
Unrecognized neglected and forsaken bledM
Time's treachery sleeks and glozes to our useD2
The bright eternal bareness dearer growsD2
To mortals what is mortal comfortedM
Mid alteration rather to keep truceD2
With the ancestral darkness than opposeD2
Too arduous scrutiny by dreams we are ledM
Content to pleasure us our truth decaysD2
The God departs the Idol staysD2
-
IIY
I have heard voices under the early starsD2
Where among hills the cold roads glimmer whiteM
Voices of shadows passing each to the otherN
Clear in the airy stillnessD2
Call their familiar greeting and Good nightM
-
Were they not come as guests to a remembered roomW2
Those words surrounded by the befriending silenceD2
But words ah words who can tell what they are made ofV3
Or how inscrutably shaped to colour and bloomW2
Sharp odours they breathe and bitter and sweet and strongY
Born from exultation endurance and desireN
Flying from mind to mind to bud a thought againW
Spring and in endless birth their wizard power prolongY
-
There was a voice on a sun shafted stairT
That sang I heard it singingY
The very trees seemed listening to their rootsD2
Out in the sunshine and like drops in lightM
The words rained on the grasses greenly springingY
-
Ah lovely living words what have we done to youG
Each infant thought a soul exulting to be bornW3
Into a body a breath breathed from the lips a wordM
Dancing tingling pulsing a body fresh as dewG
Once in the bonds of use manacled and confinedM
How have we made you labour thinned from beauty and strengthX3
Dulled with our dullness starved to the apathy of a serfY3
Outcast in streets abandoned foundlings of the mindM
-
Yet once in stillness of night's stillest hourN
Words from the page I readM
Rose like a spirit to embrace my spiritM
Their radiant secret shook me earth was newG
And I throbbed like one wakened from the deadM
-
O swift words words like flames proud as a victor's eyeY
Words armed and terrible storming the heart sendingY
Waves of love and fear and accusation overN
Peoples kindling changing Alas but can you dieY
Hardened to wither round the thought wherein you grewG
Become as the blind leading with slow shuffle the blindM
Heavy like senseless stones the savage kneels beforeB
O shamed O victim words what have we done to youG
-
-
IIY
The Presses are awake Under the midnight cloudM
Mid labyrinthine silence of the spectral streetsD2
Sound upon darkness beatsD2
A pulse quivering aloudM
Insanely as if a fever throbbed in stoneD
As if a demon plied in palpitating gloomW2
The hurry of his loomW2
To weave that tissue white for an instant thenW
Populated with words shadows of thought and actM
Death birth fear madness joy disaster packedM
Headlong into a medley a monotoneD
Indifferently echoing alikeY
Laughter and the moan of menW
-
In the avaricious gloom a secret EarZ3
Sucks with a whirlpool greed out of the skiesD2
Words voiceless words drawn in from far and nearJ2
Bubble blown rumour whisperings like spiesD2
The knife stab in the night the fall of thronesD2
Alarm of nations like a beating bellM3
Jubilant feat and misery greyH
Caught from all corners of the air pell mellM3
In a voice that no man ownsD2
That a multitude of brazen masks shall shoutM
To the multitudes of DayH
-
The few stars solitary in heights of nightM
Thieved by the cloud shine and are dimmed againW
Though none puts out their lightM
So solitary in the heart is painD3
Solitary the DreamU2
Solitary the Vow solitary the DeedM
There is no room for theseD2
In that invisible cloud woven of things that seemU2
Sure of accepting softness and the greedM
That it shall cling to and make cheaply wiseD2
An all uniting web of lies and of half liesD2
And lying silencesD2
-
Into my ear remote remote is blownD
Out of the darkness and across the seasD2
Sound of a forest falling young bodies of treesD2
One by one falling proneD
To be tamed to a helpless tissue and to feedM
The insatiate Presses' needM
Oh did they spring to scent the blue silence of airT
And sway slow to the wind launching the light winged birdsD2
Ghosts only are thereT
The ghosts of trees that shoot no fresh leaf any moreB
But drones of darkness in the midnight bearT
Black myriads of wordsD2
-
Invisibly the night thickens with words that glideM
Driven thronging on blind errands soon to fallA4
Into a million minds and glorifiedM
To be their momentary oracleB4
Glitter and then they are like the innumerable snowC4
Chance timed indifferent random swift and slowC4
That falls to a stillness out of whirling flurryC2
And workers heavy eyedM
That under the chill cloud of morning hurryC2
Muffled against the shiver in the bloodM
Soil it at every strideM
Till each articulate crystal whiteness is confusedM
And where the moment's wonder shone is mudM
Trodden stale and usedM
-
-
IIY
Hewn and heavy of granite hewnA3
Heavy and hard the walls ascendM
Bare without measure to the eyeY
Indifferent to night or noonA3
Over pavement they impendM
Locked impassive huge the DoorB
Stands caverned in the midst on highY
Ruled and squared the lintel stoneD
Bears the carven JanitorN
Justice blind upon her throneD
Her no praying hands imploreB
To her bound eyes no eyes pleadM
Reason's idol calm she sitsD2
Weighing only the gross deedM
Scrupulous with mind unsoiledM
Not to know the thoughts that bleedM
In the dumb soul fluttering beatingY
Hither thither in its cageR3
Of ancestral ignorance foiledM
Rushing blinded into rageR3
And its own desire defeatingY
Behind the door within the wallA4
Locked they sit the numbered onesD2
Secret from each other allA4
Lost to name like spectres passedM
From the region of the sun'sD2
Changeful glory on young limbsD2
Free to dance and free to leapP2
From the acted thought they fastM
Them a roof of silence dimsD2
The midnight stars move over themD4
They move not but ruled times they keepP2
With the shadows on the floorB
They are mortised in a schemeU2
Where the walls and fastened doorB
Built of words that are becomeU3
Stones are like their spirits dumbU3
-
In ripened rustle of the cornW3
The wind becomes a flowing flameT2
As swift it curves and slow relentsD2
The body of a wave is bornW3
It passes whither No one knowsD2
But in the vision that consentsD2
It is the beauty it becameT2
The wind blows and the spirit blowsD2
No moment ever yet the sameT2
And fresher than a sparkling springY
The unrepeated beauty flowsD2
And in the child that claps his handsD2
To see the daisy on the greenQ3
And in the young man where he standsD2
Poised for the naked plunge and inV2
The invisible bursting of the budM
The leafing of the bough that sendsD2
Lightness like laughter through the bloodM
Of dancing girls its wave is seenQ3
It flows and sings and never endsD2
And flowers trembling heavenly huesD2
In a lonely mountain placeD2
And chiming water's liquid curveE4
The torrent's white rock ruffled raceD2
Freed for splendour of its swerveE4
And clouds that steal the solemn bluesD2
Of noon unregioned in their traceD2
Or ghostly travellers invadeM
The mountains they dissolve in dreamU2
And mazes of the stars that fadeM
At dawn still moving lost in lightM
All all the threads of music bindM
Together in the visioned mindM
Eternity has imaged themD4
-
O lovely is their secret LawF4
Timing all their motions trueG
They know it not yet they obeyH
Without thought and without aweG4
Of that fountain unawareT
Which they spring from and renewG
Finding out their missioned wayH
Everywhere oh everywhereT
It is wild as a wild roseD2
And fearful as the weltering waveL
It is courage to the braveL
Wisdom to the eye that knowsD2
But we have bound it as with cordsD2
We have built it into stoneD
All its motions frozen starkY
Round a hidden human moanD
We have made it old and darkY
Out of maiming thought and fearsD2
And the things our fears forbidM
Out of self hurt and of rueG
We have built it into wordsD2
And the words are stones We didM
What we could not help but doG
We the eternal PrisonersD2
-
Break the word and free the thoughtM
Break the thought and free the thingY
But who in any net has caughtM
The wind or in a sieve the springY
As soon shall he dissever theseD2
Through which the life blood single streamsD2
From germ unknown to fruit unguessedM
Nourished with wonder and with dreamsD2
In its deep essence unpossessedM
And smiling out of mysteriesD2
The flower is in the bud the budM
Within the seed beneath the groundM
But all is flowing of one floodM
That is not seen that is not boundM
-
This palace prison of the mindM
How in the youthful morn it glowsD2
Its windows flame with angel lightM
Auroral flushes of the roseD2
And all the airs of heaven inviteM
With miracle of breathing blueG
And shifting glory of sun and showersD2
To ecstasy and song and whoG
Remembers how therein confinedM
In sunken cells are captive powersD2
Powers that a jailer fetters closeD2
With chains of the invisible hoursD2
To one another hardly knownD
In furtive glimpse and each aloneD
O marvel of the world O brightM
And luminous palace built to holdM
The light of heaven within its wallsD2
Precious with glory as of goldM
Why comes the night why comes the nightM
When as about it the sky fallsD2
Filled with the dark it seems to standM
A dark tower in a lonely landM
-
-
IIY
In the wonder of dreams on a wave of the sky buoyedM
My body was the body of a wish the word of a thoughtM
Uttered whole from a throb of the heart in a cry's delightM
Never bird out of Africa beating a golden voidM
Shifting the coloured regions that Spring has caughtM
Pursued the desire of its being in flightM
Happier Time an idle ruin gleamedM
Where vision flamed or flowered or streamedM
-
Slow slow the mind gropes back to curb and termH4
Of this strange world to Time that's used and allA4
The enclosing age descended ritualB4
The invisible garment cobweb fine and firmH4
Wherein the limbs move to the ancestral callA4
And hands repeat what dead hands did beforeB
And the mind lingers as behind a doorB
The hinted glory of liberty is fledM
And in its steadM
Is only the shadow of Man's ancient nurseD2
Dear Custom at whose knees he learnt the waysD2
Of his uncounted tribe schooled to rehearseD2
Cruelty and folly and ere he comprehendM
Make these his virtue so to earn her praiseD2
-
Massive as mountain to his childish gazeD2
Is that unmoved authority of powerN
His fibre trembles to offendM
And slow as the Earth is in her seasons sheC2
Befriends and punishes like sun and showerN
Well used to tears and the heart broken hourN
Smoulder of mutiny and anger tamed in the endM
Indulgent of a laughter brief as thoseD2
For all come back at night fall to her kneeC2
When the old shadows descendM
With mutter upon her lips with eyes half blindM
Buried mysteries she knowsD2
With dark fountains of ignorance in her mindM
How wise she seems amassed in ancient certitudesD2
Her silences how comfortably kindM
The human slowly growsD2
Inhuman where she broodsD2
And if a solitary spirit would wrestM
His wrongs away from what so closely cleavesD2
And break into the world that he believesD2
Betrayers from within crying Traitor seekY
To pull him back securely weakY
In passiveness he sucked it from her breastM
-
O away and away and afar from this alien homeI4
Where spirits are woven together in words of fearJ2
Released into innocence let me have being and breathI
But is it alone by mercy of dreams that I roamI4
Liberated to joy's essential sphereJ2
In an antechamber of birth or beyond deathI
All flushes around me and then dissolves awayH
The heavenly dawning closes grayH

Once only once never again neverN
The idle curve my hand traces in airT
The first flush on the cloud lost in the morning's heightM
Meeting of the eyes and tremble of delightM
Before the heart is awareT
Gone to return never again neverN
-
Futurity flows toward me all things comeU3
Smooth flowing and ere this pulse beat they are boundM
In fixity that no repenting power can freeC2
They are with Egypt and with NinevehJ4
Cold as a grave in the groundM
And still undated all things toward me comeU3
-
Why is all strange Why do I not grow usedM
The ripple upon the stream that nothing staysD2
The bough above in glory of warm light waving slowC4
Trouble me enchant me as with the stream I flowC4
Lost into the endless daysD2
Why is all strange Why do I not grow usedM
-
Eternity Where heard I that still wordM
Like one that moving through a foreign streetM
Has felt upon him bent from far some earnest lookY
Yet sees not whence and feigns that he mistookY
I marvel at my own heart beatM
Eternity how learnt I that far wordM

-
Not for pity and pardon for Judgment now I cryY
To be seen that I may see known that I may knowC4
For this I cryY
Dwelling among dear images dream createdM
Flattered or daunted by a deluding mirrorN
That is not IY
O to taste the light as my body tastes the airT
Let fall defence cast off the obstinately excusingY
Pleas and myself be my only vindicationK2
Nothing but this in the end can satisfyY
-
Why does this desire pursue me and so possess meC2
Is not breath sweet and the young smile of the morningY
Yet inly to knowC4
That I am bound in a net of minutes and of hoursD2
Inheriting bondages of habit and fearJ2
And ancient woeC4
To be rooted so deep in lost ages of timeK4
With tendrils of hope and want and frail repiningY
The ignorant accomplice of purposes abhorredM
This thought is my companion and my foeC4
-
Sometimes to fly to some remoteness of the airT
To perceive with different senses a new bodyC2
I pine and acheL4
As on this bed of self whereon I am bound I tossD2
Day and night filled with ineffectual longingY
That bond to breakL4
O yet enslaved I know not to what I am enslavedM
Only this husk and shard of what I am this fondM
Dreamer of dreams eater and drinker of untruthV
This only I know and this cannot forsakeL4
-
Wondrous glories crowd into the eye's treasure chamberN
Wondrous harmonies linger in the ear's recessesD2
Stored for delightM
But beyond the ear's compass what modulations fineU
Tremble and what marvels unapprehended sparkleB4
Beyond the sightM
Oh and beyond the mind's capacity of conceivingY
Much less of measuring amplitudes of wisdomU3
Fit to sustain eternal serenity and courageN2
While we go clouded faltering finiteM
-
Were I stationed in the sun to behold the worldsD2
Not nightly in declension but in dance triumphantM
And timeless rolledM
Had I the vision closed to the eye's horizonK2
Labyrinths of an unimagined minutenessD2
In the mind to holdM
Could I attain the greatest and assume the leastM
Shrink to be a blade of the innumerable grassD2
Soar eagle winged amid the altitudes of noontideM
Then might I measure and what I am beholdM
-
But rained over with riches of hours and momentsD2
Meshing me as a lily thick with honeyed lightM
The drunken beeC2
Intoxicated with wild sweetnesses of senseD2
Fullness of the opened heart glory of earth and beautyC2
Enamouring meC2
Roofed in a den I am a poor captive ratherN
Who sits in fetters eyeing the barred the precious blueG
Where high in the envied air a cloud lingers in lightM
And wings fly whither they desire to beC2
-
Lying in the night I hear from graves unnumberedM
Under stars that have seen all history passingY
The indignant cryY
Must we only in effigy and phantom be rememberedM
Malignly obscured or mocked with gilded pretencesD2
Wherefrom we flyY
Will none unwind these cerements none lift up from usD2
This load of false praise and false fortune's betrayalB4
Let us be known in nakedness of our natureN
Deliver us from dominion of the lieY
-
As if they wandered in deserts and groped in cavesD2
I hear the exclaiming of disenchanted spiritsD2
In bitter lamentM
Beholding the barren things for which they wastedM
The world the pitiable causes whereon their breathI
And blood were spentM
Was this the Light this little candle at noon This loathedM
Cruelty the righteousness for which they thirstedM
Sacrificing to invisible idols of the mindM
They see But who hears This world is contentM
-
Perfect Experience Is not the mind worthyC2
This when for glimpses only and shining fragmentsD2
The martyrs bledM
Majesty and splendour of overcoming visionK2
Vision all judging certain and universalB4
Not this I dreadM
But to remain banished into a parcelled beingY
Eternized in all these faculties of errorN
Better a perfect oblivion in Earth's vastnessD2
By that eternal ignorance comfortedM
-
Yet does my heart not cease from its supplicationK2
Yet I remember and cannot be satisfiedM
By Time oppressedM
And as if summoned and drawn whither I know notM
Clinging into earth with strong fibres of natureN
In dark unrestM
I burn like a seed that in burial forgottenK2
Pushes its hope up growing in blind affianceD2
Toward the light shining over an unconceived worldM
There to be lost illumined and releasedM
-

In my dream there was a DoorB
Dark on my musing path it stoodM
Before me and straightway I knewK2
The certainty ran through my bloodM
That did I open and pass throughK2
I should know all for evermoreB
Those slow hinges and that weightM
Relenting on them would unrollB4
The hidden map of all my fateM
And all the world and the world's soulB4
-
Who has trembled not at doorsD2
Motionless they shake the heartM
Hope and menace on them hangY
They are the closed lips' counterpartM
Wherein the sentence is concealedM
For leaping joy or lancing pangY
Ah what answer will they yieldM
Will it be barren as the shoresD2
That endless waves beat like a knellB4
Slowly repeated to Time's endM
Or will it be the ineffableB4
Still radiance that shall all amendM
Melting out Time's ancient stainK2
Will they open on sunriseD2
Everlasting or will theyH
Close upon the light againK2
Like eyelids closing over eyesD2
That see for the last time the dayH
Is it not by such ancient dreadM
Inspired the warning doubt of whatM
Our prospering spirits has full fedM
With certainties by hope begotM
That on his progress proud we raiseD2
For the returning conquerorN
The arch the immaterial doorB
So he may pass amid the blazeD2
And loud acclaim at glory's heightM
Beneath a shadow of the nightM
Where the hinted powers take tollB4
Of what is mortal in the soulB4
-
O Door like sealed fatal decreeC2
Image of death image of birthX2
Ever uncertain certaintyC2
O silence as of silent earthX2
O silence into substance builtM
O night projected into dayH
O still unspoken Yea or NayH
O brimming vessel still unspiltH
O end that meets us on the wayH
What lies behind your blank accostH
Is it the treasure we have lostH
And laboured wearily to recoverN
Or something that we never knewK2
Another mind with other measuresD2
Laughing to scorn our pangs and pleasuresD2
Is it at last the only trueK2
The unknown Love the unknown LoverN
-
With all my soul at earnest gazeD2
Fixed upon that silent DoorB
I stretched my hand the latch to raiseD2
I lifted up my hand and thenK2
Some power forbade me and I forboreB
-
In the changes of my dreamU2
I was borne to a far placeD2
Empty and wide and all a gleamU2
With sunlit quivering of the grassD2
There rose before me vast and blindH
A towered prison walled and oldH
It seemed a prison house so greatH
It could have held all human kindH
In the midst there was a gateH
And as I dreamed my dream beholdH
I saw the prisoners releasedH
The gates rolled back and forth they cameT2
Stumbling in the light that smoteH
Full on them from the dazzling EastH
Like knives it stabbed them like a flameT2
It seared them with their hands they hidH
Their faces or as if by roteH
Stretched out vain arms to touch and feelB4
Familiar walls closing aroundH
Then lacking fetters halted lameT2
Waiting to do what they were bidH
Their helpless motions made as thoughC4
They would run back or fall or kneelB4
Or hide themselves beneath the groundH
This way and that they looked to goC4
O never may I see againK2
Such looks of blank and empty painK2
They were looks of men betrayedH
And of their naked souls afraidH
But some there were a few that stoodH
And stretched their arms up to the sunK2
As if the light streamed through their bloodH
As if their breath was now begunK2
As if their spirits till then had sleptH
As if they never yet had knownK2
The world of life that was their ownK2
These it was not those who weptH
Was it for pity of all that sadH
Throng or the extreme joy they hadH
O that on earth I could have sightH
Of those faces and that lightH

I am laid within a place of summer leavesD2
Solid boles mount through foliage out of sightH
No shadow lacks some intimacy of lightH
No penetrating radiance but receivesD2
Shadowy immersion DreamU2
Is on me is on the hushed the thronged and drowsing glowC4
Even the thoughts emerging from the mindH
Like voices in a sleeping city seemU2
Reproved This is old Earth so old and kindH
That she is lenient in her overflowC4
To all things human Why why tease the senseD2
For a hope to a fear unmatedH
Why rend the rich seam of experienceD2
Why toss upon thoughts frustratedH
-
Each way appears a closing avenueK2
Leading among warm scents I know not whereB
But Whither is to the idle mind no careB
For always there is fragrance of some clueK2
Neglected that might guideH
As in a trance the veiled soul to its unknown peaceD2
Peace such as comes like lips laid upon lipsD2
A brimmed oblivion of all else besideH
Like anchorage to tempest blinded shipsD2
When the thwart waves resign and the winds ceaseD2
Earth with warm arms embrace me and let me feelB4
Feel only a wonder workingY
Until the tender and still sense revealB4
The secrets round me lurkingY
-
Now might you come back old divinitiesD2
Earth born from cradling green and lost recessD2
Serene in your unclouded nakednessD2
To enrich the mirror of my musing eyesD2
As fruit on the rough boughL3
Globes itself the last golden glory of the treeB
Smooth from wild earth the human image roseD2
And what diviner shape should hear the vowL3
Of mortals or what else their secret knowsD2
Though past the ache of our mortalityB
Shall I not sacrifice unrest and fumeW2
On an altar here secludedH
Let the vext mind re open like a bloomW2
Upon which the light has broodedH
-
Delay me from the sight that only seesD2
Frost of a dawn disclosing the world bareB
And stript of splendour all things as they areB
When stiffened grasses and stark branches freezeD2
And the mind shrinks apartH
With all the living colours famished out of itH
O kindly mediation interposeD2
Images of those forms that hold the heartH
Warm wondrous forms whereinto the world flowsD2
To bloom and to perfect them O admitH
Certitude to obscurity awhileB4
As cloud in the light suspendedH
Gracious is Earth not far her secret smileB4
And here is the soul befriendedH
-
Only such sorrow as lingered in the gazeD2
Of Proserpine returning from the darkY
Such tears as filled her listening to the larkY
And looking on the flower that springs and swaysD2
All humanized for herB
As even the shadows were when she was throned in nightH
No more than these to enhance the glowing dayH
Shall enter where the green leaves are astirB
Shall I not be sufficed and charm awayH
Perplexities to soft and shadowy flightH
Shall I not now O whence is this breath comeU3
Of Time in a stealing chillnessD2
Why cries my heart out Why are all things dumbU3
And strange strange the stillnessD2
-

Whisper to me whisper I have listened and have not heardH
Whisper to me you leaves have you not more to sayD2
Now at the ebb of the low evening rayD2
Whisper some word left over from the dayD2
The one word the lost wordH
So I cried and then was stilledH
For suddenly unsought unwilledH
I knew not how I knew not whenceD2
There came a lightening of the senseD2
I found an answer from withinK2
That made me to the stars akinK2
My pulse obeyed the lovely LawB4
With ears I heard with eyes I sawB4
And one leaf veined with green indwelling lightH
Seemed the world's secret and absorbed me quiteH
Eternity through a momentH
Sparkled I could not turn away my sightH
-
What thing long contemplated alters notH
Its seeming substance as the deepening mindH
By contemplation passes out of thoughtH
Immenser worlds to findH
The Mother as she clasps her infant boyM4
Bent over him with the deep looks of joyM4
Becomes her own hope oh she staysD2
Not with the idol of her gazeD2
But she is gone beyond her farthest prayerB
And Time's last injury to meet him thereB
All that distracts him from her bosom nowL3
White butterflies a waving boughL3
Presages the usurping world she growsD2
To something more than fear and hope forebodeH
Wide as the sky He goesD2
Out of her heart's possessionK2
Yet in her arms he lies that stranger and that GodH
-
Free on its wings the mind can hover worlds awayD2
To where the vast Atlantic streamU2
Dwindles to a watery gleamU2
And like a star in bright noondayH
The body's home is lostH
The mind can tell me that these mossedH
Gray boulders in green shadow deepP2
Appearing sunk and socketed in sleepP2
Beneath their image of reposeD2
Are all a dizzy motion whirledH
A streaming dust our sight so grossD2
Confuses to a solid worldH
Never mortal eye has seenK2
Those minim motes no thought can lodge betweenK2
So restless in their secret feverB
They dance invisibly for everB
Alone the soul has knowledge of releaseD2
Only in the soul is stillnessD2
Poised to receive a universe in peaceD2
-
Only in the soul is stillness I remember an hourB
It was the May month and wild throats were singingY
From bough to bough that breathed in bud and flowerB
And the full grass was springingY
Beneath an old gray towerB
I remember those blue scented airsD2
And how I came at unawaresD2
Beside the daisied border of a meadH
Upon a pool so magically clearB
It made each coloured pebble and furry weedH
And star grained sand within its depth appearB
Like things of Paradise unearthly brightH
No surface seemed to interveneK2
Fairy floor and eye betweenK2
Save for a traceless quivering of the lightH
Gentle as breathing sleep where stoleB4
Up from its pregnant darknessD2
The living spring as private as the soulB4
-
Love from its inward well a secret wonder arisingY
Clear as the trembling water springY
A spirit that knows not anythingY
Simple in the world and nought despisingY
Changes all it meets the stoneK2
Becomes a gem the weed a roseD2
But oh within itself it growsD2
By all it touches all it makes its ownK2
Vast and multitudinous a PowerB
To act to kindle and to dowerB
In pain's and fear's despiteH
With glory of unending lightH
O fountain in my heart I feel you nowL3
Full and resistless so I nothing scornK2
How could I lose you howL3
Ever for an hour forget youK2
This is the world whereinto I was bornK2
-
Why did I tread long roads seeking seeking in vainK2
Why did I make lament of the dark nightH
Why crouch with images of old affrightH
Eternal Moment hold me again againK2
Bathe me in wells of lightH
It is now and it is hereB
The something beyond all things dearB
The miracle that has no nameT2
When I am not then I amN4
Having nothing I have allB4
It was my hands that built my prison wallB4
It was my thought that did my thought confineK2
It was my heart refrained my heart from loveV3
Now I am stilled as in a gaze divineK2
Now I flow upward from my secret wellB4
Now I behold what spirit I am ofV3
The Body is the Word nothing dividesD2
This blood and breath from thought ineffableB4
Hold me Eternal MomentH
The Idols fade the God abidesD2
