In a vision of the night I saw themA
In the battles of the nightB
'Mid the roar and the reeling shadows of bloodC
They were moving like lightB
-
Light of the reason guardedC
Tense within the willD
As a lantern under a tossing of boughsE
Burns steady and stillD
-
With scrutiny calm and with fingersF
Patient as swiftG
They bind up the hurts and the pain writhenH
Bodies upliftG
-
Untired and defenceless around themA
With shrieks in its breathI
Bursts stark from the terrible horizonH
Impersonal deathI
-
But they take not their courage from angerJ
That blinds the hot beingK
They take not their pity from weaknessL
Tender yet seeingK
-
Feeling yet nerved to the uttermostG
Keen like steelM
Yet the wounds of the mind they are stricken withN
Who shall healM
-
They endure to have eyes of the watcherJ
In hell and not swerveO
For an hour from the faith that they followP
The light that they serveO
-
Man true to man to his kindnessL
That overflows allQ
To his spirit erect in the thunderJ
When all his forts fallQ
-
This light in the tiger mad welterJ
They serve and they saveR
What song shall be worthy to sing of themA
Braver than the braveR
