The English Youth Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDEFFGGHHIIJJKK AALLM MNNOOAAPPQQRR

There is a dimness fallen on old famesA
Our hearts are solemnized with dearer namesA
Than Time is bright with we have not heard aloneB
Or read of it in books it is our ownB
Eyes that have seen this wonder like a songC
It is in our mouths for ever There was wrongC
Done and the world shamed Honour blew the callD
And each one's answer was as naturalE
And quiet as the needle's to the poleF
Who gave must give himself entire and wholeF
So books were shut and young dreams shaken outG
In cold air dear ambitions done withoutG
And a stark duty shouldered And yet theyH
Who now must narrow to their arduous dayH
Did not forget their nurture nor the kindI
Muses of earth nor joys of eager mindI
Graced in their comradeship and prizing moreJ
Life's beauty and all the sweetness at the coreJ
Because of that loathed business they were setK
To do and finish It was the world's debtK
Claiming all but they knew and would not winceA
From that exaction on their flesh and sinceA
They did not seek for glory our hearts addL
A more than glory to that hope they hadL
And gloriously and terribly achievedM
-
O histories of old time half believedM
None needs to wrong the modesty of truthN
In matching with your legend England's youthN
But all renown that fearless arms could winO
For proud adventuring wondrous PaladinO
Is glimmering laurel now Romance that wasA
The coloured air of a forgotten causeA
About the heads of heroes dead and brightP
Shines home We are accompanied with lightP
Because of youth among us and the nameQ
Of man is touched with an ethereal flameQ
There is a newness in the world begunR
A difference in the setting of the sunR
