The Enemy Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDEEFGGF HIJKLLMMGNNG

Would'st thou this monster that we name the worldA
Who round the envied tree of blissful fruitB
Lies like a dragon curledA
In jealous watch our venture to disputeB
Would'st thou that she were smoothly negligentC
By any pleader bentD
A tender judge to tears and pity proneE
She that on love defeated builds her throneE
The spoiler strong sanguine with our despairsF
She that the traitor in us holds in feeG
Rich with our woes with our fears cruel sheG
Whose easy wisdom the sad heart ensnaresF
-
Rather rejoice that this immortal foeH
To truceless war our ardour challengesI
She hath her task to doJ
Her maw to fill her rages to appeaseK
Nor less because the noble rebel claimsL
Exemption from her shamesL
Is of her native harshness justifiedM
Sharp be our swords trebly our armour triedM
Our hearts enduring and relentless beG
To look her 'twixt the eyes as conquering menN
And take her worst of wounds For then O thenN
If we can bear our freedom we are freeG
