The Birch Tree Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBACC DEDEFGFGHHIIJKKJ| Touched with beauty I stand still and gaze | A |
| In the autumn twilight Yellow leaves and brown | B |
| The grass enriching gleam or waver down | B |
| From lime and elm far glimmering through the haze | A |
| The quiet lamps in order twinkle dumb | C |
| And fair the park lies faint the city's hum | C |
| - | |
| And I regret not June's impassioned prime | D |
| When her deep lilies banqueted the air | E |
| And this now ruined then so fragrant lime | D |
| Cooled with clear green the heavy noon's high glare | E |
| Nor flushed carnations breathing hot July | F |
| Nor April's thrush in the blithest songs of the year | G |
| With brown bloom on the elms and dazzling sky | F |
| So strange a charm there lingers in this austere | G |
| Resigning month yielding to what must be | H |
| Yet most O delicate birch I envy thee | H |
| Child among trees with silvery slender limbs | I |
| And purple sprays of drooping hair Night dims | I |
| The grass the great elms darken no birds sing | J |
| At last I sigh for the warmth and the fragrance flown | K |
| But thou in the leafless twilight shinest alone | K |
| Awaiting in ignorant trust the certain spring | J |
