Keen comes the dizzy airA
In one tumultuous breathB
The tower to heaven lies bareA
Dumb stir the streets beneathC
-
Immeasurable skyD
Domes upward from the dimE
Round land the astonished eyeD
Supposes the world's rimE
-
And through the sea of spaceF
Winds drive the furious cloudG
Silent in endless raceF
And the tower rocks aloudG
-
Mine eye now wanders wideH
My thought now quickens keenI
O cities far descriedH
What ravage have you seenI
-
Of an enkindled worldH
Homes blazing and hearths bareA
Of hosts tyrannic hurledH
On pale ranks of despairA
-
Who fed with warm proud bloodH
The cause unquenchableJ
For which your heroes stoodH
For which our Sidney fellJ
-
Sidney whose starry fameK
Mirrored in noble songL
Shines all our sloth to shameK
And arms us against wrongL
-
Bright star that seems to burnM
Over yon English shoreN
Whither my feet returnM
And my thoughts run beforeN
-
Run with this rumour broughtH
By the wild wind's alarmsO
Dark sounds with battle fraughtH
Menace of distant armsO
-
O menace harsh but vainP
For what can peril doH
But search our souls againQ
To sift and find the trueH
-
Prove if the sap of oldH
Shoots yet from the old seedH
If faith be still unsoldH
If truth be truth indeedH
-
Welcome the blast that shakesR
The wall wherein we have lainP
Slumbering our heart awakesR
And rends the prison chainP
-
Turn we from prosperous toysR
And the dull name of easeR
Rather than tarnished joysR
Face we the angry seasR
-
Or if old age infirmS
Be in our veins congealedH
Bow we to Time our termS
Fulfilled and proudly yieldH
-
Not each to each we are madeH
Not each to each we fallJ
But every true part playedH
Quickens the heart of allJ
-
That feeds and moves and firesR
The many peopled landsR
And in our languor tiresR
But in our strength expandsR
-
For forward gazing eyesR
Fate shall no terror keepT
She in our own breast liesR
Now let her wake from sleepT
