The Spirit of Earth robed in greenA
The Spirit of Air robed in blueB
The Spirit of Water robed in silverC
The Spirit of Fire robed in redD
Each steps forward in turnE
-
Spirit of EarthF
I am the Spirit of EarthF
-
Spirit of AirG
I am the Spirit of AirG
-
Spirit of WaterC
I am the Spirit of WaterC
-
Spirit of FireC
I am the Spirit of FireC
-
All togetherC
This is the shore of the sea Stillness and hot noonH
Stillness after storm The sun scorches the sandI
On the sand of the sea is a pyreC
On the pyre a young man's bodyJ
White and nakedK
-
Spirit of EarthF
A child of EarthF
-
Spirit of WaterC
Out of the sea he is comeL
-
Spirit of EarthF
To the last shoreM
-
AllN
Ringed with flames this body lies flames shining flames entwiningO
-
Spirit of FireC
VaultingO
-
AssaultingO
-
Spirit of FireC
DancingO
-
AllN
LancingO
On the noon intenser lightP
Branding on the air a fierier fireC
-
Spirit of WaterC
The slow sea ripple sparkles up the sandI
-
AllN
Afar the mountains look down on the landI
-
Spirit of AirG
He was swiftnessQ
-
Spirit of EarthF
He is stillR
-
Spirit of WaterC
A wave breaking a wave brokenS
At the sea's willR
-
AllN
His eyes drank of the world's beautyJ
His eyes wept for the world's wrongO
-
Spirit of FireC
His eyes shine on the world no moreM
-
AllN
Out of his mouth came forth songO
Wondering trembling triumphing lamentingO
-
Spirit of EarthF
His mouth will utter songs no moreM
-
AllN
A Power breathed a Power filled a Power kindled and made strongO
The heart this mortal throbbed with O whence came it O whence cameT
Power to frailty hope to anguish He was swift and he was strangeU
Swift as stream swift as wind strange to all he came amongO
-
Spirit of FireC
Leap my flames tower and quiverC
-
AllN
So into the world he cameT
-
Spirit of FireC
No wind blows the fire to bendV
It springs right upward to the sunS
Mount my flames ascend ascendV
-
Spirit of EarthF
Out of me this spirit roseW
His cradle green and sleepy earthF
A seed sown in a chance placeX
Where from who knowsW
Yet from my womb was his birthF
-
Spirit of WaterC
He was my lover In river and seaJ
He plunged his body his ardour flowedY
With the flow of the streams and the rain and the cloudZ
Now I have rendered up my loverC
-
Spirit of FireC
Higher higher higherC
In wild dishevelled blazeA2
Single plumes of light aspireB2
To be lost in the noon's hazeA2
-
AllN
These flames are your thoughts these fires your desires O MortalC2
Speeding before you as you the far forerunnerC
Outstript O spirit arrayed in the sanguine colourC
Of cloud at dawn the laggard the lulled and dulledD2
Announcing a dawn too dazzling for your kindE2
-
Spirit of FireC
You left them behindE2
-
AllN
And winged in a radiant mist of love you flewB
Onward alone not on earth was a home for youB
Where men oppressed and trafficked and hope was foiledF2
Soiled despoiled Yet hope was the breath you drewB
-
Spirit of AirC
The white body is changing it has taken the swift shapeG2
Of fire and the fire passes dazzling the noonH
Shedding all but swiftness and the ecstasy of flightP
Of the light into lightP
-
Spirit of FireC
Sink my flamesH2
-
Spirit of WaterC
As a falling fountainS
The flames sink downI2
-
Spirit of EarthF
But the heart remainsJ2
Unconsumed it is mine in earthF
-
AllN
Out of the fire O spirit come forthK2
To us who have been from the beginningO
Bond by bond chain by chainL2
Our hands are untwisting what bound you we free youB
Release you from TimeM2
And the harsh taste of the cold worldN2
Custom calumny ignorance painL2
Come away Noon is silent in heat that tremblesJ2
Silent the sea that took you and all the windsJ2
Silent the shadowy mountains they look downI2
And the stars that are known but in darkness to menO2
They also the true starsJ2
They are the silence you the voiceJ2
And the voice soars upward singingO
From where the sparks expireC
And the embers of fire darkenS
A fountain cascading in drops as of lightP
Flowing over invading the silence in joy to be freeC
It ascends in its radiance singing singing and weC
We hearkenS
