Peace in smooth summer hourA
Paces the seas awhileB
But Peace has built her towerA
Upon this chosen isleB
-
Scarcely a ripple stirsC
In this lone shore's recessD
Scarcely a motion blursC
The mirrored cypressesC
-
Ranked on a crumbling wallE
O'er slopes of flowery grassC
Where their long shadows fallE
Butterflies gleam and passC
-
The idle sunshine sleepsC
Before a porch withinF
Cool the white cloister keepsC
Peace that has always beenF
-
Beyond a tangled plotG
Of garden and tall treesC
Soothing its fragrance hotG
In freshness from the seasC
-
There young monks slowly paceC
With seldom lifted eyesC
With world unwritten faceC
Not mournful yet nor wiseC
-
Have they in this fair foldH
Lost the fierce world in truthI
Or must the storms of oldH
Still shake the heart of youthI
-
Far in blue northern hazeC
The vast Alps glimmer paleJ
Faint through the slumbrous blazeC
Comes the white sea gull's wailJ
