To R G R and H P PA
Let not the mind that would have peaceB
Too much repose on former joyC
Nor in pourtraying past delightD
Her needed active power employC
-
So as we linger and look backE
Tired and perplext with present fearsF
Comes the clear voice of something sternG
Across the frivolous fleeting yearsF
-
Pressed onward without power to pauseH
By their imperious silent waveI
How little of the precious pastJ
Hoarded so anxiously we saveI
-
Scarce with beseeching tears we cryK
To some delicious moment stayL
Ere the rude hours have swept us onM
Lamenting we are borne awayL
-
Yet often in our deep desireN
Backward we cannot help but gazeO
If gazing might perchance restoreP
Some lost and lovely yesterdaysO
-
Come then and ere Time takes them quiteD
Gather with careful choice to findQ
Whatever flowering memories serveR
To make a garden of the mindQ
-
Near tender thoughts and unsoiled namesS
Names murmured to our hearts in sleepT
And dreams too pure for the world's eyeK
These too their sacred place shall keepT
-
Then let the cloud swept midnight blowU
Fresh on our cheeks again the sprayL
As the prow plunges where we standV
And watch the coast from bay to bayL
-
Lying so lonely sleeping softW
Under the breezes of the nightD
Only on each dim headland gleamsX
Far seen its beaconing faithful lightD
-
Again upon our waking eyesY
Let Plymouth Sound and Plymouth HoeU
The woody Mount the ships the strandV
Bright in the morning sunshine glowU
-
Or let the tender twilight steepT
As at our journey's end the moorZ
When glad and tired at last we reachA2
The Lizard and our cottage doorP
-
The Lizard hark the name brings backE
The noise remote of moving seasB2
Storied as those whose waters foamedV
Round the renowned HesperidesB2
-
On Kynance Cove our window looksB2
The foam swept rocks the tides' unrestV
The gathering dusk and one pure starC2
Deep in the visionary westV
-
And there we sit while evening diesB2
Far o'er that lone romantic seaB2
Where famous fallen LyonnessB2
Sleeps with its ruined chivalryB2
-
By Dolour Hugo's wondrous wallsB2
Under their arching gloom we glideV
Rocking our boat with rustling noiseB2
The shadowy waters swell subsideV
-
Cold strikes the air our voices wakeD2
Weird echoes in the roof belowU
Deep through the glimmering waves we seeB2
The long weeds washing to and froU
-
Then round the headland's troops of gullsB2
To hospitable Cadgwith comeE2
Sweet Cadgwith climbing o'er the cliffF2
With cottage gardens bright in bloomG2
-
Ah morns at Housel where we batheH2
Where sounding up the cliffs and cavesB2
The blue sea tumbles salt and brightV
Fresh in our faces burst the wavesB2
-
Ah that wild slope beyond PenzanceB2
Where deep in heather drowsed we lieK
Till on us steals the fairy mistV
And makes a blank of sea and skyK
-
Blots out the distant Lizard coastV
And steals across the silent bayL
Saint Michael's Mount becomes a cloudV
And dimly wanes the lingering dayL
-
So may not the oblivious monthsB2
With other scenes however brightV
Wash out your names with all that madeV
Our sojourn by your shores delightV
-
Sweet shores to the remembering mindV
Thrice lovelier now for what were yeB2
Without the charm that still survivesB2
Of chosen friends' societyB2
-
Nay can Earth's sweetest sights and soundsB2
A running stream a rosy skyK
Uncheered by human thoughts assuageI2
The deep desire for sympathyB2
-
Like a fair face without a heartV
They charm and for an hour controlJ2
But easily we turn awayL
They have not lingered in the soulJ2
