Is it we that are wise is it weA
Who have bought with a price of griefB
A wisdom seldom freeA
From scorn or disbeliefB
Who find this world fulfilC
An end that is not our willC
Who toil with the light in our eyesD
Showing us scarce begunE
The things we meant to have doneE
Is it we is it we that are wiseD
-
Or O is it you is it youF
That have yet no language of oursG
But whose eyes are a laughter blueF
As of light slipping under the showersG
Whose carol sweeter than wordsH
Trills clear as an April bird'sH
Or a dancing brook on the hillC
Blithe springs of a confidenceI
That bubbles we know not whenceJ
And has no knowledge of illC
-
Lo our desires have goneK
Like ships to a future farL
And vanished in mist aloneM
By no befriending starL
But all to you is a wonderN
Fresh as the sky whereunderN
Life moves to pledge delightO
You need no hope to bearN
The day through the day's careN
Your joys are all in sightO
-
You want not a word to tellC
What lies beyond our guessP
And springs like a sparkling wellC
In a lovely speechlessnessP
And we that have shaped with artQ
Language of mind and of martQ
We have never yet found speechR
For the heart's blood deepest stirredS
Something is flown with a wordS
Or is buried beneath our reachR
-
Our speech is spun from the painT
Of thought and heavy with yearsP
And dyed with an ancient stainT
From passion and blood and tearsP
But O I vow when I hearN
Your wordless carol clearN
I would cast this speech that enduresP
As a sorry old patchwork coatU
Could I but re fill my throatU
With the liquid joy in yoursP
