Trefoil and QuatrefoilA
What shaped those destinied small silent leavesB
Or numbered them under the soilA
I lift my dazzled sightC
From grass to skyD
From humming and hot perfumeE
To scorching quivering lightC
Empty blue WhyD
As I bury my face afreshF
In a sunshot vivid gloomE
Minute infinity's meshF
Where spearing side by sideG
Smooth stalk and furred upliftH
Their luminous green secrets from the grassI
Tower to a bud and delicately divideG
Do I think of the things unthoughtG
Before man wasJ
-
Bodiless NumbersK
When there was none to exploreL
Your winding labyrinths occultG
None to delve your oreL
Of strange virtue or doG
Your magical business youG
Were there never old nor newG
Veined in the world and aliveM
Before the Planets SevenN
Before these fingers FiveM
-
You that are globed and singleA
Crystal virgins and you that partG
Melt and again mingleA
We have hoisted sail in the nightG
On the oceans that you chartG
Dark winds carry us onward onO
But you are there before us silent AnswersK
Beyond the bounds of the sunN
You body yourselves in the stars inscrutable dancersK
Native where we are noneN
-
O inhuman NumbersK
All things change and glideG
Corrupt and crumble suffer wreck and decayP
But obstinate dark Integrities you abideG
And obey but them who obeyP
All things else are dyedG
In the colours of man's desireQ
But you no bribe nor prayerR
Avails to soften or swayP
Nothing of me you shareR
Yet I cannot think you awayP
And if I seek to escape you still you are thereR
Stronger than caging pillars of ironS
Not to be passed in an airR
Where human wish and wordG
Fall like a frozen birdG
-
Music asleepT
In pulses of sound in the wavesU
Hidden runes rubbed brightG
Dizzy ladders of thought in the nightG
Are you masters or slavesU
Subtlest of man's slavesU
Shadowy NumbersK
-
In a vision I sawV
Old vulture Time feedingW
On the flesh of the world I sawV
The home of our use undatedG
Seasons of fruiting and seedingW
Withered and hunger and thirstG
Dead with all they fed onO
Till at last when Time was satedG
Only you persistedG
D dal Numbers sole and sameX
Invisible skeleton frameX
Of the peopled earth we tread onO
Last as firstG
-
Because naught can availA
To wound or to tarnish youG
Because you are neither sold nor boughtG
Because you have not the power to failA
But live beyond our furthest thoughtG
Strange Numbers of infinite clueG
Beyond fear beyond ruthY
You strengthen also meZ
To be in my own truthY
