Coiled in shadow the serpent seasA
Engirdle perilous hills sublimeB
By tortuous steep degreesA
Toward the morn I climbB
-
Before me the mountain soaring vastC
Secludes the bright east cold the airD
Descends from ridges massedC
In peaks snowily fairD
-
But pale in the northern distance blushesE
On sparkling ranges a light austereF
Tingeing the shade it flushesG
Edge and barrier sheerF
-
Cattaro roofs and Cattaro quayH
Grow faint and delicate ships that rideI
On the dense blue slumbering seaH
Dwindle on either sideI
-
From mirroring gulfs the mountains bareD
Are mapped to the heaven strange as a dreamJ
The Adriatic afarK
Trembles a molten gleamJ
-
Till the sun salutes me met with himL
On the naked summit closed behindM
That vision of countries dimL
Pales and fades from the mindM
-
Now drinking the eager lofty airD
The spirit leaps as the eyes beholdN
Valleys severely fairD
Freedom's fortress of oldN
-
Young stern soldiers in rich attireO
Haughtily moving with silent paceP
And eyes of a tranquil fireO
Sons of a tameless raceP
-
Aged mothers bowed with toilQ
Old men bearded and gray are hereR
Plants of a stubborn soilQ
That knows not the seed of fearF
-
O Mountain mother of men that bearestN
Heroes foster mother of fameS
I hail thee well thou wearestN
Thy dark invincible nameS
-
Thou plantest the footstep firm and the heartN
In the breast strengthenest hardy to tryT
Peril and play its partN
With full unwavering eyeT
-
At mighty breasts of the ancient hillsU
Nourished thy sons in their veins yet keepV
The force that feeds and fillsU
Torrents to dance and leapV
-
Trees that with clench d root possessW
Their rocky beds oak and pineX
Alone thou endurest nor lessW
Permittest in children of thineX
