Night smiles on me with her starsA
Mystic pure enchanted loneB
Light that only heaven disclosesC
Is in heaven that no cloud marsA
Here through murmuring darkness blownB
Comes the scent of unseen rosesC
-
Now the world is all asleepD
Drowsy man dull rest is takingE
I with whispering trees apartF
My deserted vigil keepD
Light leaves in the light wind shakingE
Echo back my beating heartF
-
And the garden's perfumes thrill meG
Like a touch or whispered nameH
Heliotrope and lavenderI
Slumber odoured lilies fill meG
With their breath like subtlest flameH
Vague desire and yearning stirI
-
Shadowy elms above me crownedJ
With mysterious foliage dimK
Mid the stars against the skiesL
Hidden lawn and alley boundJ
Full of voices full of dreamM
Fragrant breathings and long sighsL
-
Wishes that with eager tonguesN
Strive among the soft blown boughsO
Each an amorous messengerI
Dreams that glide in noiseless throngsP
Wing d flight of earnest vowsO
Listening with hushed breath I hearQ
-
This intoxicating sweetnessR
That the perfumed air exhalesR
Stir of thoughts and dear desiresR
Joys that faint with their own fleetnessR
Passion that for utterance failsR
Whither burns it where aspiresR
-
'Tis for her whose worshipped handS
Holds my heart for life for deathT
Ah could she could she but comeU
Hither where Love's witching wandV
Holds the midnight's thoughtful breathT
While the stars are glittering dumbU
-
Come that into that sweet earQ
I might pour what until nowW
Never heart brought tongue to tellX
Mistress ne'er had bliss to hearQ
Lover with his hundredth vowW
Vainly sought to syllableY
-
Pale with transport when I takeZ
'Twixt my hands her face and lookA2
Deep into her brimming eyesR
Passionately fain to speakB2
How my trembling murmurs mockC2
Those unuttered ecstaciesR
-
And when cheek to cheek is prestD2
And the pulse of her pure beingE
Throbs from her veins into mineE2
Love in torment from my breastD2
Cries athirst for language freeingE
In sweet speech his pangs divineE2
-
How should language weak and vainF2
Bear the burden of such joyG2
How should words the meaning reachH2
Of that charm's ecstatic painF2
Charm which words would but destroyG2
Of devotion beyond speechH2
-
But to night dear Love is kindI2
And those jealous bonds that meshJ2
The heart's tongue tied truth sets freeG
Undivided unconfinedI2
By those walls of human fleshJ2
Look my heart is bared to theeG
-
Seeing thou shalt want not eyesR
Hearing thou shalt need not earsR
Purged our spirits shall burn throughK2
Tedious day's necessitiesR
O to cast off doubts and fearsR
To touch truth and feel it trueK2
-
Thou my tender thought shalt findI2
Ever like a quick eyed slaveL2
Watching for thy wish unspokenM2
In my inmost treasury shrinedI2
Looks and tones thy spirit gaveL2
Faith's for ever cherished tokenM2
-
Come O come where'er thou artI2
Ere this rich hour past reprieveN2
In the garish daylight dieI2
Hear me Sweet and my heart's heartI2
My soul's soul believe receiveN2
Poured into a single sighI2
