Men Of Verdun Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEAA FGHG IAAAA AAJA KLAL KAMMA NOPO AAQA RSHS

There are five men in the moonlightA
That by their shadows standB
Three hobble humped on crutchesC
And two lack each a handB
-
Frogs somewhere near the roadsideD
Chorus their chant absorbedE
But a hush breathes out of the dream lightA
That far in heaven is orbedA
-
It is gentle as sleep fallingF
And wide as thought can spanG
The ancient peace and wonderH
That brims in the heart of manG
-
Beyond the hills it shines nowI
On no peace but the deadA
On reek of trenches thunder shockedA
Tense fury of wills in wrestle lockedA
A chaos of crumbled redA
-
The five men in the moonlightA
Chat joke or gaze apartA
They talk of days and comradesJ
But each one hides his heartA
-
They wear clean cap and tunicK
As when they went to warL
A gleam comes where the medal's pinnedA
But they will fight no moreL
-
The shadows maimed and anticK
Gesture and shape distortA
Like mockery of a demon dumbM
Out of the hell din whence they comeM
That dogs them for his sportA
-
But as if dead men were risenN
And stood before me thereO
With a terrible flame about them blownP
In beams of spectral airO
-
I see them men transfiguredA
As in a dream dilateA
Fabulous with the Titan throbQ
Of battling Europe's fateA
-
-
For history's hushed before themR
And legend flames afreshS
Verdun the name of thunderH
Is written on their fleshS
