In The British Museum Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ JKJK LJLJ MNMN OPOQ

Shafts of light that poured from the August sunA
Glowed on long red walls of the gallery coolB
Fell upon monstrous visions of ages goneC
Still smiling Sphinx winged and bearded BullD
-
With burnished breast of ebon marble queenE
And king regarded full from a tranquil brainF
Enthroned together conquered Time sereneE
In spite of wisdom and older than ancient painF
-
Hither a poor woman with sad eyes cameG
And vacantly looked around The faces vastH
Their strange motionless features touched with flameG
Awed her in humble wonder she hurried pastH
-
And shyly beneath a sombre monument soughtI
Obscurity into the darkest shade she creptJ
And rested soon diverted awhile her thoughtI
Returned to its own trouble At last she sleptJ
-
Not long sweet sleep alone her spirit possestJ
A dream seized her a solemn and strange dreamK
For far from home in an unknown land opprestJ
By burning sun in the noon's terrible beamK
-
She wandered around her out of the plain aroseL
Immense Forms that high above her staredJ
Calm they seemed and used to human woesL
Silent they heard her sorrow with ears preparedJ
-
Now like a bird flitting with anxious wingsM
Imprisoned within some vast cathedral's aislesN
Hither and thither she flutters to each she bringsM
Her prayer and is answered only with grave smilesN
-
Indescribably troubled Crush me '' she criesO
Speak speak or crush me '' The lips are dumbP
She woke no longer in shadow the sun on her eyesO
And sighed and arose and returned to her empty homeQ
