Wisdom and Valour FaithA
Justice the lofty namesB
Of virtue's quest and prizeC
What is each but a cold wraithA
Until it lives in a manD
And looks thro' a man's eyesC
-
On Chivalry as I museE
The spirit so high and clearF
It cannot soil with aughtG
It meets of foul misuseE
It turns wherever burnsH
The flame of a brave thoughtG
-
And wheresoever the moanI
Of the helpless and betrayedG
Calls from near or farJ
It replies as to its ownI
Need and is armed and goesK
Straight to its sure pole starJ
-
No legendary knightG
Renowned in an ancient causeL
I warm my thought uponM
There comes to the mind's sightG
One whom I knew whose handG
Grasped mine George CalderonM
-
Him now as of old I seeN
Carrying his head with an airO
Courteous and virileP
With the charm of a nature freeN
Daring resourceful promptG
In his frank and witty smileQ
-
By Oxford towers and streamsR
Who shone among us allS
In body and brain so boldG
Who shaped so firm his themesR
Crystal hard in debateG
And who hid a heart less coldG
-
Lover of strange tonguesT
Whether in snowy RussiaU
Or tropic island bowersV
Listening to the songsW
Of the soft eyed islandersV
Crowned with Tahitian flowersV
-
A maker of friends he wentG
Yet who divined him whollyN
Or his secret chivalriesV
Was all that accomplishmentG
Wit alertness graceV
But a kind of blithe disguiseV
-
Restless in curious thoughtG
And subtle exploring mindG
He mixt his modern veinX
With a strain remotely broughtG
From an older blood than oursV
Proud loyalties of SpainX
-
Was it the soul of a swordG
For a bright sword leapt from sheathA
Upon that August dayG
When war's full thunder storedG
Over Europe suddenly crashedG
And a choice upon each man layG
-
Others had left their youthA
In the taming years and someY
Doubted some made moanI
To meet the peril of truthA
With aught but a gay courageZ
Was not for CalderonM
-
Wounded from France he cameA2
His spirit halted notG
In that long battle afarJ
Fruitless in all but fameA2
Athos and Ida sawV
Where sank his gallant starJ
-
O well could I set my moodG
To a mournful falling measureB2
For a friend dear and deadG
And well could memory broodG
Singing of youth's delightG
And lost adventure fledG
-
But that so fearless friendG
With his victorious smileQ
My mourning mood has chidG
He went to the very endG
He counted not the costG
What he believed he didG
