Grief is like a childA
Led with relentless handB
By a strange nurse whose faceC
Seems never to have smiledA
Whose onward gaze severeD
Slackens not nor her paceC
Nor that child's faltering fearD
Stoops she to understandB

So strides the world while griefE
Unwilling is borne onF
With ever lingering mindG
Through the strange days aloneH
Oh like a fluttering leafE
On the ways of the strong windG
Or pebbles helpless thrownH
By night on a wild strandB
Lost are the thoughts of griefE
That none can understandB
