Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDB EFDFGF HIJKLK MNONPN HFQFNF RNSNTN NFFFEF DUHUMU HVFVWV DFFFMF ENCNFN XYNYNY MPNEFPEPThe night is holy and haunted | A |
Asleep in a vale of June | B |
Stillness and earth smell mingle | C |
With the beams' unearthly boon | B |
Yet a terror is fallen upon me | D |
From the other side of the moon | B |
- | |
If it be Truth that's hidden | E |
Upon that other side | F |
Unseen unguessed of any | D |
Waiting to be descried | F |
Without shadow or footstep | G |
Goblins by me glide | F |
- | |
The mellow moon entrancing | H |
An English meadow here | I |
Silvers the old farm roofs below | J |
And dewy grasses near | K |
But the world her far side faces | L |
I think of it and fear | K |
- | |
If not man's ancient terror | M |
Bribed with long sacrifice | N |
If not old ignorance whose hope | O |
Would truth to itself entice | N |
If reason be the goblin | P |
That thrills my blood to ice | N |
- | |
The bean blossom is breathing | H |
From fields in glimmer spread | F |
A rose hangs black on the amber air | Q |
But I am lured and led | F |
To an outer vast apartness | N |
Beyond man's hope or dread | F |
- | |
I look down upon me and mine | R |
As with translated eyes | N |
My struggle in rapture and anguish | S |
But noted like a fly's | N |
My world at stake my heaven and hell | T |
Small as a beetle's prize | N |
- | |
Busy in deep sea dungeons | N |
Great mouths of fishes blind | F |
Blind wheel of planet on planet | F |
In gulfs no thought can find | F |
The proud black stare of a falcon | E |
Without a thought behind | F |
- | |
Possess me dispossess me | D |
They mock me not they are | U |
The worlds are all a web that's hung | H |
Beyond conception far | U |
That a gorged and hairy spider | M |
Spins in the central star | U |
- | |
Ferocity of begetting | H |
Prowling hunger's maw | V |
Fury of teeth and hot spilt blood | F |
Cold pounce and tearing claw | V |
Laughterless lust the swarm and spawn | W |
That one another gnaw | V |
- | |
A race to death a frenzy | D |
Rushing into the night | F |
A rage of life a riot | F |
Seen in a moment's light | F |
And Death the wild pursuer | M |
Close on that fever flight | F |
- | |
I see it all in vision | E |
I see with murdered sense | N |
Of neither good nor evil | C |
Nor make a fool's pretence | N |
I share I too that hunted | F |
And horrible innocence | N |
- | |
Cruelty's matched with courage | X |
Not that a power should thrive | Y |
Which twists its poison tendrils | N |
In all that is alive | Y |
Nor that with those fell doings | N |
My fate be to connive | Y |
- | |
Not this the ulterior terror | M |
That has the goblin grin | P |
But that the ignorant stare of space | N |
Be the end as the origin | E |
This glorious palace of the mind | F |
A cave that tumbles in | P |
And reason mocked by reason | E |
Be all the goal to win | P |
