The night is holy and hauntedA
Asleep in a vale of JuneB
Stillness and earth smell mingleC
With the beams' unearthly boonB
Yet a terror is fallen upon meD
From the other side of the moonB
-
If it be Truth that's hiddenE
Upon that other sideF
Unseen unguessed of anyD
Waiting to be descriedF
Without shadow or footstepG
Goblins by me glideF
-
The mellow moon entrancingH
An English meadow hereI
Silvers the old farm roofs belowJ
And dewy grasses nearK
But the world her far side facesL
I think of it and fearK
-
If not man's ancient terrorM
Bribed with long sacrificeN
If not old ignorance whose hopeO
Would truth to itself enticeN
If reason be the goblinP
That thrills my blood to iceN
-
The bean blossom is breathingH
From fields in glimmer spreadF
A rose hangs black on the amber airQ
But I am lured and ledF
To an outer vast apartnessN
Beyond man's hope or dreadF
-
I look down upon me and mineR
As with translated eyesN
My struggle in rapture and anguishS
But noted like a fly'sN
My world at stake my heaven and hellT
Small as a beetle's prizeN
-
Busy in deep sea dungeonsN
Great mouths of fishes blindF
Blind wheel of planet on planetF
In gulfs no thought can findF
The proud black stare of a falconE
Without a thought behindF
-
Possess me dispossess meD
They mock me not they areU
The worlds are all a web that's hungH
Beyond conception farU
That a gorged and hairy spiderM
Spins in the central starU
-
Ferocity of begettingH
Prowling hunger's mawV
Fury of teeth and hot spilt bloodF
Cold pounce and tearing clawV
Laughterless lust the swarm and spawnW
That one another gnawV
-
A race to death a frenzyD
Rushing into the nightF
A rage of life a riotF
Seen in a moment's lightF
And Death the wild pursuerM
Close on that fever flightF
-
I see it all in visionE
I see with murdered senseN
Of neither good nor evilC
Nor make a fool's pretenceN
I share I too that huntedF
And horrible innocenceN
-
Cruelty's matched with courageX
Not that a power should thriveY
Which twists its poison tendrilsN
In all that is aliveY
Nor that with those fell doingsN
My fate be to conniveY
-
Not this the ulterior terrorM
That has the goblin grinP
But that the ignorant stare of spaceN
Be the end as the originE
This glorious palace of the mindF
A cave that tumbles inP
And reason mocked by reasonE
Be all the goal to winP
