Elegy Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIK LMNM OPOQ ARAR SHSH TUTU NVNV UWUW

The little waves fall in the wintry lightA
On idle sands along the bitter shoreB
The piling clouds are all a pale suspended flightA
They tarry and are moved no moreB
-
Thin rushes tremble about the naked duneC
A hovering sail sinks down the utmost seaD
With wreckage and old foam the unending sands are strewnC
And the waves heap their dumbness over meD
-
This is the earth that lasts beyond our dreamsE
Of time and rushing onward without restF
Deludes us with her trancing silences yet teemsE
Fiercely and burns within her breastF
-
Insatiate of youth this old old EarthG
Who uses our spent ashes for her needH
Shaping the delicate marvel of her youngest birthG
And still she kindles a new seedH
-
Intent on the unborn creature of her thoughtI
And busy in the waste O even hereJ
Though masked as in a calm of dumb frustration naughtI
Stays her no pang nor any fearK
-
But subtly with a touch invisibleL
She is changing and compelling and me tooM
Me too upon the secret stream of that deep willN
She moves to a destiny ever newM
-
And yet this hour my spirit hides its faceO
And backward turned sighs out an idle painP
For the remembered paths these feet may not retraceO
And the hours that cannot come againQ
-
O hours of heavenly madness in delightA
That felt the swiftness and the throb of wingsR
That stole the burning soul of naked summer nightA
And the moons of the perfumed springsR
-
Not now to you my longing stretches handsS
But to lost hours that had no fruit no seedH
Like fading of low light beyond forgotten landsS
They have passed and are dead indeedH
-
And once for once unrecking Earth you seemT
With me to linger and to acquiesceU
To share the desolation of my doubt and dreamT
And to ponder upon barrennessU
-
The wind lulls on the waste and has no willN
The foiled tides hush and falter at their boundV
A little sand is blown then all again is stillN
And the clouds hang their silence aroundV
-
With such an absence felt in the lone skiesU
Suppression of such tears profoundly sprungW
In long remembering looks of unconversing eyesU
As when the old bury the youngW
