And were they but for this those passionate schemesA
Of joy that I have nursed indeed for thisB
That longings day and night have filled my dreamsA
Now it has come the hour of blissB
How different it seemsA
-
So thought I bitterly but on my bedC
As I lay lone and restless in my earD
Falling from some far place of peace o'erheadC
Through the still dark I seemed to hearD
These accents softly shedC
-
Wouldst thou then child from this invading painE
Find refuge and relax thy suffering willF
In tears To peace wouldst thou indeed attainE
Remember all thy courage stillF
True to thyself remainE
-
What is it to thee if some wished delightC
That from the future beckoned thee at lastC
Comes changed its former glory faded quiteC
Fly the perfidious Hours keep fastC
Within the springs of lightC
-
What is it to thee if in some dear mindC
Another is remembered more than thouG
Quench that poor envy let no gazer findC
Aught in thine acts or on thy browG
But what is sweet and kindC
-
For how shall that pure spirit whom vain things fleeH
Whom passion's ebbs and floods delight not LoveI
The consolation of the world if heH
Out of his course so lightly moveJ
Immortal and eternal beH
-
Take courage peace at last and joy attendC
The true fixt heart that mocks Time's envious powerK
The heart that tender even to the endC
Exacts not joy from any hourK
Nor love from any friend ''-
-
Alas how oft I have wished that voice had sparedC
Its counsel stern nor pointed me through tearsL
My path How oft to feet stumbling and scarredC
That path impossible appearsM
Which yet is only hardC
