Their hearts were burning in their breastsA
Too hot for curse or criesB
They stared upon the towers that burnedC
Before their smarting eyesB
-
There where since France began to beD
Anointed kings knelt downE
There where the Maid the unafraidF
Received her vision's crownE
-
The senseless shell with nightmare screamG
Burst and fair fragments fellH
Torn from their centuries of peaceI
As by the rage of hellH
-
What help for wrath what use for wailJ
Before a dumb despairK
All ancient high heroic FranceL
Seemed burning bleeding thereK
-
Within the pillars soar to gloomM
Lit by the glimmering RoseN
Spirits of beauty shrined in stoneO
Afar from mortal woesN
-
Hearing not though their haunted shadeF
Is stricken and all aroundP
With splintering flash and brutal crashQ
The ghostly aisles resoundP
-
And there upon the pavement stretchedR
The German wounded groanO
To see the dropping flames of deathS
And feel the shells their ownO
-
Too fierce the fire Helped by their foesN
They stagger out to airK
The green grey coats are seen are knownO
Through all the crowded squareK
-
Ah now for vengeance Deep the groanO
A death knell QuietlyD
Soldiers unsling their rifles liftT
And aim with steady eyeU
-
But sudden in the hush betweenV
Death and the doomed there standsW
Against those levelled guns a priestX
Gentle with outstretched handsW
-
Be not as guilty as they he criesB
Each lets his weapon fallY
As if a vision showed him FranceL
And vengeance vain and smallY
