IA
Out of the Forest into a terrible splendourB
Of noon the pinnacles of the temple portalsC
Stone Faces immense in carven ruinD
Above the trembling of giant trees emergeE
-
Stone Faces of secret and eternal smileF
Ruined Faces perilously toweringG
Over the waving of the wilderness a fourfoldH
Gaze opposing the slow strength of TimeI
-
Visible afar stony serenity crownJ
Of the builders' labour of imaginationD
Last and loftiest thought of a little dustK
That once robed in authority moved commandingG
-
When overseeing his busy handed companiesL
Of workmen and elephants hoisting obedientM
A King magnificent satiate of victoryB
Builded his vision of the eternal PeaceN
-
Have you not heard alone in your abandonmentM
Since the last echoing vibrations vanishedO
Of tremulous fame diminishing have you notP
'Mid the resplendent silence of the noonQ
-
Heard the cry of the little seed in the earthR
Prisoned and crying to the mighty Sun in heavenD
With his strong beams to find and to deliver herB
Through million miles of air is heard her cryB
-
The cry of Desire that aches with a blind throbbingG
Ignorant of all but the aching of its desireB
Desire inappeasable cruel as a desert thirstS
Desire born of desire breeding desireB
-
In lust of light it springs from the little seedT
Climbing out of the hot suffocation of darknessU
Multiplying bursting swelling to burst afreshV
Writhing and wrestling to mount into the lightW
-
And up from the furnaces of its own corruptionD
As with a trample of triumph to the imperiousU
Sting of the Sun and the prodigally spendingG
Wanton rain surges the sap in answerB
-
As if it were red blood boiling in the suddennessU
Of panther's sinewy and ungovernable springG
As if it were an invisible conflagrationD
Glorying up into a momentary splendourB
-
The sap presses stronger than spirting fountainsX
Reasonless wild as the doubled strength of madmenD
Invisible and unheard it races intoY
The boughs and the boughs stream out into the leavesZ
-
Roots thrust downward into the black heat of earthR
Boughs descend thicken and root themselves afreshV
The builded fabric is seized and is enfoldedY
In the tightening of those fibres passive as a victimA2
-
Supplanting the jamb a root upholds the lintelB2
Cracking the rounded column and delicately carvedY
Frieze with slow muscle the serpent foldsC2
Fasten increasing crush or twist awryB
-
Invented order and scruple of willed proportionD
The strong square all the lineaments of reasonD
Lost in the green extravagance the stranglingG
Young embraces of a pitiless desireB
-
Vast blocks upheaved as by an elephant'sD2
Shouldering force are incredibly suspendedY
By vast stems that swelling slow like pythonsD2
Capture a purchase for their upward toweringG
-
The ancient meditation of the Gods is prisonedY
As in the clasp of heavy and voluptuous armsD2
The still presence of Peace is broken in fragmentsD2
Ruined and fabulous is the eternal smileF
-
The Stone Faces look from a lost battleB2
Over the ascending wilderness the nearingG
Waves of Time re conquering EternityY
As a beaten rock left on a crumbling strandY
-
-
IIA
Images people the shadows and throng the sun soakedY
Porches demon forms and the armed stridingG
Of warriors frowns of scorn and limbs of angerB
And 'mid their conflict shapes of young delightY
-
Ah Heavenly Dancer motioned by an ecstasyY
Breathed into stone O time delivered visionD
Image of celestial joy everlastingG
Sung by the body to the Spirit's fluteY
-
Now like a shipwreckt remnant of securityY
Drifted to shore by the negligent ocean streamsD2
Thou hidest shaped into the image of humanityY
As lips hide speech the Spirit's profound desireB
-
In a trance the eye can behold the hands that formed theeY
Supple hands chiselling the stone's resistanceD2
To a thought in the fingers' pressure and smooth relentingsD2
Transfiguring ancient stone to breathing mindY
-
Like as the distant gaze and sky diviningG
Will of the helmsman with touches light as breathE2
Shape the speed of a winged keel to unionD
With the firm wind's invisible inspirationD
-
The hand traces the blood thinks and pausesD2
Fingers marry and divide perfecting motionsD2
Delicately measuring shape into significanceD2
Dreams But hands have purpose these have noneD
-
These strong fibres strong as the whole bodyY
Of a wrestler locked in an obstinate tenacityY
Of effort clutch of innumerable tendrilsD2
Never relaxing their terrible embraceD2
-
Live Live they cry as they mount exuberantY
Whither O whither the seething savage ardourB
Craving and riotous in its own destructionD
Answers only the silence of the SunD
-
The silence of the Sun possesses the still crannyY
Smooth lizards flicker across the abraded wallF2
High amid molten splendour in topmost treesD2
The indolent gibbon swings from branch to branchG2
-
Song of birds rippling an airy and strange chimeI
And shrilled unceasing chorus of cicalasD2
Crown the ruined history of proud peoplesD2
The Forest burns in the crucible of the SunD
-
-
IIIA
Out of the moulder of Time and great oblivionD
Shines the remoteness of legendary majestiesD2
Willed to remain high over farthest sundownJ
Now in a memory melting insubstantialB2
-
Solomon the King built a temple in JerusalemA2
For the glory of the Lord to inhabit for eternityY
Lebanon from her forests gave him cedar and cypressD2
These became pillar and beam and coffered ceilingG
-
Carved with lily and gourd and palm and pomegranateY
And all overlaid was the house within with goldY
Stone was the foundation in the midmost was the oracleB2
There Solomon ascended to the secrecy of the LordY
-
It was told to Solomon There is a queen in SabaH2
In Saba of sweet valleys of spices and precious stonesD2
Young she is and comely and she seeks after wisdomA2
Great pity it is that she worshippeth the SunD
-
Balkis the queen had grave men for her counsellorsD2
Warriors stood before her to execute her biddingG
She was wise in her body's secret wisdom of beautyY
But none knew her wisdom it flowed not from her lipsD2
-
It was told in the ears of Balkis Solomon the KingG
Is wiser than all men even the sages of EgyptY
Also he has riches beyond computationD
Armies he has and navies and seven hundred wivesD2
-
Learned is he in the tongues of beast and birdY
In the hearts of the fishes and of all creeping thingsD2
And Balkis was seized with a marvelling curiosityY
I will see this Solomon said Balkis and aroseD2
-
And with heavy laden camels she journeyed to JerusalemA2
And Solomon accepted her Arabian spice he showed herB
The splendour of his house his servants and all his horsemenD
And the temple founded to be the Lord's for everB
-
Solomon and Balkis sat upon lofty thronesD2
Together the bright birds of the air thronged round themI2
Many coloured plumage and the King knew their voicesD2
The lion in the desert also he heard afarB
-
Solomon spoke not of his own magnificenceD2
And the things he had shown her surpassing belief and rumourB
Till her heart was faint he had shown her all these marvelsD2
And not a question asked he had not answeredY
-
But he spoke of the Temple wherein he had newly housedY
The glory of the invisible God creatorB
Of all men even of Solomon and his wisdomA2
The temple built to endure for everlastingG
-
Then were they silent Evening descended on themI2
And the low sun smote that high place in JerusalemA2
Over against all the splendour of the TempleB2
That seemed eternity flaming before their eyesD2
-
In the gaze of Solomon was a great contentmentY
With all he had willed and all he had performedY
But still in the unreasonable memory of BalkisD2
Was the cry of the seed to the glory of the SunD
-
-
IV-
Lips imperious bosom superb EyesD2
Smiling with all persuasion to all adventureB
Veins that leap in the lightning of ecstasy SpiritY
Of splendour and storm peril of Caesar and sageJ2
-
Whether to charm the eagle mind from form its solitudeY
And wondrously to enter the secret and strange placesD2
Of wisdom passionately importuning that ultimateY
Possession satiate of all else besideY
-
Or with subtle tendrils of pleasure serpentiningG
About the strength of the stony will and weavingG
Nets invisible merciless inescapableB2
Softly to master the mastery of the strongG
-
Or stung by profounder hunger of satisfactionD
Incarnate Flame to tower a rapturous momentY
Over an empire fallen in ashes exultingG
To vanish in legend having destroyed a worldY
-
From what seed sown in the ignorant immensityY
Of existence ascend you into agonies and furiesD2
Not joy not pain but necessity of deliveranceD2
To enchant to burn into victory and perishK2
-
These dead doorways black squares of emptinessD2
Framed in vivid stone that scorches the handY
And dazzles the sight are not so hollowL2
As the sockets that housed the brilliance of your eyesD2
-
And this palsy of twisted and whitened fibreB
Dangling inert athwart the interior blacknessD2
Is not so wasted as the suppleness of armsD2
Moulded to be chains about the necks of conquerorsD2
-
All that interior triumph of the throbbing heartY
Throbbing through wall and pillar and through the hardnessD2
Of men dissolving fortresses is quieterB
Than dust in the corner earth from you has peaceD2
-
O Stone Faces was it a far off visionD
Of Peace that the builder imagined when he shaped youY
That shadowy King to endure beyond his memoryY
And awe with eternal mask the children of TimeI
-
Surely in his heart was a vision of Life the DestroyerB
Dancing the dance of Desire the all creatingG
All destroying Power from Power proceedingG
Or Death from Death issuing who shall knowL2
-
Or who distinguish the inconceivable richesD2
From the inconceivable ruin the victory crowned withM2
Annihilation Afraid of his own visionD
He lent it human lineaments of PeaceD2
-
-
VY
Here in the forest under a roof of matsD2
Cross legged sitting with a bowl beside himN2
Waited the Hermit in his still persistenceD2
Motionless contemplating the eternal motionD
-
Come back thou Hermit here in the fierce forestY
To thine own station whether from a handfulO2
Of dust remoulded or from the wandered worldsD2
Of air an essence into Time resumedY
-
Still as a flame is still in a windless placeD2
Seeking thy far and invisible affinityY
I see thee careless of emperors and captainsD2
As of the tree tops towering above theeY
-
Hearing not clash of arms nor the resoundingG
Triumph nor cry of the vanquished but with sensesD2
Unfeasted sure of that foreknown subsidingG
Into the silence where thy thought is native-
-
Round thy ribs slowly fasten the serpent rootsD2
Over thee meshes that insatiate voracityY
As with mouths thirsting for life's fierce savourB
As with limbs lusting for the pleasures of the SunD
-
Still art thou there like the emptiness a whirlpoolP2
Furiously encompasses O indestructibleB2
Emptiness Only the communion of silenceD2
Fills thee and light that the evening dims notY
-
O naked Hermit seated in thy mysteryB
Of patience gazing down the ruin of TimeI
Thou to the ravaging forest that rejoicesD2
To teem and perish perish and teem againQ2
-
Thou art no more than a fallen fragment of stoneR2
Only to be seized by the implacable fibresD2
Lifeless without share in the green upsurgingG
That streams about thee and climbs above thy headY
-
But to thee dipt into a central stillnessD2
All this enormity of violent abundanceD2
All the strength of the serpent roots and the wildY
Energy leaping into boughs and leavesD2
-
Are but obstructing shadow and apparitionD
Vapours ascending from vain desires of TimeI
Drawn as a mist is drawn from the wandering riversD2
The stream into the cloud and the cloud into the streamS2
-
But from what desire O Solitary dost thou comeA2
From what seed sown in the abysses of the starsD2
Was the strong engendering of the passion of thy stillnessD2
Desire surpassing all the desires of mortalsD2
-
Secret in the anchored body's immense surrenderB
A strange transforming vision a strange excessD2
Prisoned in the heart's beat and out of its prisonD
Crying to the glory of the Universal SunD
