My spirit was like the lonely air	A
Before night	B
Like hovering cloud that's melted there	A
In the late light	B
When slow the vast earth shadows reach	C
To the last flush	D
And the wandering silences have each	C
Their own hush	D

Did the green grass about me glimmer	E
Or trees tower	E
Not softer to my sense nor dimmer	E
The obscure power	E
Of all the world's wide trouble fought	F
In the heart's recess	G
My heart was solitude my thought	F
Emptiness	H

But through my spirit that seemed unfilled	I
Alone to float	J
A sudden dewy sweetness thrilled	I
A low note	J
And then a loud note rippling full	K
To a still pause	L
The liquid silence was a pool	M
That a breeze flaws	L

It throbbed again how lonely clear	N
A song that seemed	O
Sprung beyond memory or fear	N
A voice dreamed	O
In a land that no man ever found	P
And who knows	Q
What shook those lingering drops of sound	P
At the rich close	R

Ah where were you passion and grief	S
Of the world's wrong	T
What had you to do with a trembling leaf	S
And a bird's song	T
And spaces calm with coming of night	B
And the fresh gloom	U
Of shadowy trees and smelt delight	B
Of hidden bloom	U

Yet O in me that song had part	V
Because of you	W
It drank of the very blood of the heart	V
It quivered through	W
Because of the tears of joy and the cost	X
Of a joy's breath	Y
Measureless thoughts of a dearness lost	Z
Hope and death	Y

Strangeness of longing beauty pain	A2
I was aware	A
Of all your secret soft as rain	A2
In the dim air	A
For Life it was that sang aloud	B2
To the lone dew	W
Brave in the night and sweet in the cloud	B2
