The Shepherd's Wife's Song Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCDEE FFBGG HHBII EEBJK LEBMM NNBOOEEE

Ah what is love It is a pretty thingA
As sweet unto a shepherd as a kingA
And sweeter tooB
For kings have cares that wait upon a crownC
And cares can make the sweetest love to frownC
Ah then ah thenD
If country loves such sweet desires do gainE
What lady would not love a shepherd swainE
-
His flocks are folded he comes home at nightF
As merry as a king in his delightF
And merrier tooB
For kings bethink them what the state requireG
Where shepherds careless carol by the fireG
-
He kisseth first then sits at blithe to eatH
His cream and curds as doth a king his meatH
And blither tooB
For kings have often fears when they do supI
Where shepherds dread no poison in their cupI
-
To bed he goes as wanton then I weenE
As is a king in dalliance with a queenE
More wanton tooB
For kings have many griefs affects to moveJ
Where shepherds have no greater grief than loveK
-
Upon his couch of straw he sleeps as soundL
As doth the king upon his bed of downE
More sounder tooB
For cares cause kings full oft their sleep to spillM
Where weary shepherds lie and snort their fillM
-
Thus with his wife he spends the year as blitheN
As doth the king at every tide or sitheN
And blither tooB
For kings have wars and broils to take in handO
Where shepherds laugh and love upon the landO
Ah then ah thenE
Since country loves such sweet desires do gainE
What lady would not love a shepherd swainE
