Footnote Sickness may be often an incentive to poetical composition I found it so and I esteem the following lines only because they remind me of past feelings which I would not willingly forgetA
-
-
Health I seek thee dost thou loveB
The mountain top or quiet valeC
Or deign o'er humbler hills to roveD
On showery June's dark south west galeC
If so I'll meet all blasts that blowE
With silent step but not forlornF
Though goddess at thy shrine I bowG
And woo thee each returning mornF
-
I seek thee where with all his mightH
The joyous bird his rapture tellsI
Amidst the half excluded lightH
That gilds the fox glove's pendant bellsI
Where cheerly up this bold hill's sideJ
The deep'ning groves triumphant climbK
In groves Delight and Peace abideJ
And Wisdom marks the lapse of timeK
-
To hide me from the public eyeL
To keep the throne of Reason clearM
Amidst fresh air to breathe or dieL
I took my staff and wander'd hereN
Suppressing every sigh that heavesO
And coveting no wealth but theeP
I nestle in the honied leavesO
And hug my stolen libertyP
-
O'er eastward uplands gay or rudeQ
Along to Erith's ivied spireR
I start with strength and hope renew'dQ
And cherish life's rekindling fireS
Now measure vales with straining eyesT
Now trace the church yard's humble namesU
Or climb brown heaths abrupt that riseT
And overlook the winding ThamesV
-
I love to mark the flow'ret's eyeL
To rest where pebbles form my bedW
Where shapes and colours scatter'd lieL
In varying millions round my headW
The soul rejoices when aloneX
And feels her glorious empire freeP
Sees GOD in every shining stoneX
And revels in varietyP
-
Ah me perhaps within my sightH
Deep in the smiling dales belowE
Gigantic talents Heav'n's pure lightH
And all the rays of genius glowE
In some lone soul whom no one seesY
With power and will to say AriseT
Or chase away the slow diseaseY
And Want's foul picture from his eyesT
-
A worthier man by far than IL
With more of industry and fireS
Shall see fair Virtue's meed pass byL
Without one spark of fame expireR
Bleed not my heart it will be soE
The throb of care was thine full longZ
Rise like the Psalmist from his woeE
And pour abroad the joyful songZ
-
Sweet Health I seek thee hither bringA2
Thy balm that softens human illsB2
Come on the long drawn clouds that flingA2
Their shadows o'er the Surry HillsB2
Yon green topt hills and far awayC2
Where late as now I freedom stoleD2
And spent one dear delicious dayC2
On thy wild banks romantic MoleD2
-
-
Aye there's the scene beyond the sweepE2
Of London's congregated cloudF2
The dark brow'd wood the headlong steepE2
And valley paths without a crowdF2
Here Thames I watch thy flowing tidesG2
Thy thousand sails am proud to seeP
But where the Mole all silent glidesG2
Dwells Peace and Peace is wealth to meP
-
Footnote Box Hill and the beautiful neighbourhood of Dorking in SurryP
-
Of Cambrian mountains still I dreamH2
And mouldering vestiges of warI2
By time worn cliff or classic streamH2
Would rove but prudence holds a barJ2
Conic then O Health I'll strive to boundK2
My wishes to this airy standL2
'Tis not for me to trace aroundK2
The wonders of my native landL2
-
Yet the loud torrent's dark retreatM2
Yet Grampian hills shall Fancy giveN2
And towering in her giddy scatO2
Amidst her own creation liveP2
Live if thou'lt urge my climbing feetM2
Give strength of nerve and vigorous breathQ2
If not with dauntless soul I meetM2
The deep solemnity of deathQ2
-
This far seen monumental towerS
Records th' achievements of the braveR2
And Angria's subjugated powerS
Who plunder'd on the eastern waveR2
I would not that such turrets riseT
To point out where my bones arc laidS2
Save that some wandering bard might prizeT
The comforts of its broad cool shadeS2
-
O Vanity since thou'rt decreedT2
Companion of our lives to beP
I'll seek the moral songster's meedT2
An earthly immortalityT2
Most vain O let me from the pastT2
Remembering what to man is givenU2
Lay Virtue's broad foundations fastT2
Whose glorious turrets reach to Heav'nU2
