Sweet Hope so oft my childhood's friendA
I will believe thee stillB
For thou canst joy with sorrow blendA
Where grief alone would killB
-
When disappointments wrung my heartC
Ill brook'd in tender yearsD
Thou like a sun perform'dst thy partC
And dried my infant tearsE
-
When late I wore the bloom of healthF
And love had bound me fastG
My buoyant heart would sigh by stealthF
For fear it might not lastG
-
My sickness came my bloom decay'dH
But Philip still was byI
And thou sweet Hope so kindly saidJ
He'll weep if thou should'st dieI
-
Thou told'st me too that genial SpringK
Would bring me health againL
I feel its power but cannot singK
Its glories yet for painM
-
But thou canst still my heart inspireN
And Heaven can strength renewO
I feel thy presence holy fireP
My Philip will be trueO
-
-
-
All eyes were turn'd all hearts with pity glow'dQ
The maid stood trembling and the lover bow'dR
As rose around them while she dried her tearsE
Long life to Rosamond and happy yearsD
-
Scarce had the voices ceased when forth there cameS
Another candidate for village fameS
By gratitude to Heaven by honest prideT
Impell'd to rise and cast his doubts asideT
A sturdy yeoman button'd to the throatU
Faced the whole ring and shook his leathern coatU
I have a tale of private life to tellV
'Tis all of self and home I know it wellV
In love and honour's cause I would be strongW
Mine is a father's tale perhaps too longW
For fathers when a duteous child's the themeX
Can talk a summer's sun down and then dreamX
Of retrospective joys with hearts that glowY
With feelings such as parents only knowY
