'O Winds howl not so long and loudA
Nor with your vengeance arm the snowB
Bear hence each heavy loaded cloudA
And let the twinkling Star beams glowB
-
'Now sweeping floods rush down the slopeC
Wide scattering ruin Stars shine soonD
No other light my Love can hopeC
Midnight will want the joyous MoonD
-
'O guardian Spirits Ye that dwellE
Where woods and pits and hollow waysF
The lone night trav'ler's fancy swellE
With fearful tales of older daysF
-
'Press round him guide his willing steedG
Through darkness dangers currents snowsH
Wait where from shelt'ring thickets freedG
The dreary Heath's rude whirlwind blowsH
-
'From darkness rushing o'er his wayI
The Thorn's white load it bears on highJ
Where the short furze all shrouded layI
Mounts the dried grass Earth's bosom dryJ
-
'Then o'er the Hill with furious sweepK
It rends the elevated treeL
Sure footed beast thy road thou'lt keepK
Nor storm nor darkness startles theeL
-
'O blest assurance trusty steedG
To thee the buried road is knownM
Home all the spur thy footsteps needG
When loose the frozen rein is thrownM
-
'Between the roaring blasts that shakeN
The naked Elder at the doorO
Though not one prattler to me speakP
Their sleeping sighs delight me moreO
-
'Sound is their rest they little knowB
What pain what cold their Father feelsQ
But dream perhaps they see him nowR
While each the promis'd Orange peelsQ
-
Would it were so the fire burns brightS
And on the warming trencher gleamsT
In Expectation's raptur'd sightS
How precious his arrival seemsT
-
'I'll look abroad 'tis piercing coldU
How the bleak wind assails his breastV
Yet some faint light mine eyes beholdU
The storm is verging o'er the WestV
-
'There shines a Star O welcome sightS
Through the thin vapours brightening stillW
Yet 'twas beneath the fairest nightS
The murd'rer stained yon lonely HillW
-
'Mercy kind Heav'n such thoughts dispelE
No voice no footstep can I hearX
Where Night and Silence brooding dwellE
Spreads thy cold reign heart chilling FearY
-
'Distressing hour uncertain fateZ
O Mercy Mercy guide him homeA2
Hark then I heard the distant gateZ
Repeat it Echo quickly comeB2
-
'One minute now will ease my fearsC2
Or still more wretched must I beL
No surely Heaven has spar'd our tearsD2
I see him cloath'd in snow 'tis heL
-
'Where have you stay'd put down your loadE2
How have you borne the storm the coldU
What horrors did I not forebodeE2
That Beast is worth his weight in gold '-
-
Thus spoke the joyful Wife then ranF2
And hid in grateful steams her headG2
Dapple was hous'd the hungry ManF2
With joy glanc'd o'er the Children's bedG2
-
'What all asleep so best ' he criedH2
O what a night I've travell'd throughI2
Unseen unheard I might have diedH2
But Heaven has brought me safe to youI2
-
'Dear Partner of my nights and daysF
That smile becomes thee Let us thenJ2
Learn though mishap may cross our waysF
It is not ours to reckon when '-
