Ingenuous trust and confidence of LoveA
-
-
The Bat began with giddy wingB
His circuit round the Shed the TreeC
And clouds of dancing Gnats to singB
A summer night's serenityC
-
Darkness crept slowly o'er the EastD
Upon the Barn roof watch'd the CatE
Sweet breath'd the ruminating BeastD
At rest where DOLLY musing satE
-
A simple Maid who could employF
The silent lapse of Evening mildG
And lov'd its solitary joyF
For Dolly was Reflection's childG
-
He who had pledg'd his word to beC
Her life's dear guardian far awayH
The flow'r of Yeoman CavalryC
Bestrode a Steed with trappings gayH
-
And thus from memory's treasur'd sweetsI
And thus from Love's pure fount she drewJ
That peace which busy care defeatsI
And bids our pleasures bloom anewJ
-
Six weeks of absence have I borneK
Since HENRY took his fond farewellL
The charms of that delightful mornK
My tongue could thus for ever tellL
-
He at my Window whistling loudM
Arous'd my lightsome heart to goN
Day conqu'ring climb'd from cloud to cloudM
The fields all wore a purple glowN
-
We stroll'd the bordering flow'rs amongO
One hand the Bridle held behindP
The other round my waist was flungO
Sure never Youth spoke half so kindP
-
The rising Lark I could but hearQ
And jocund seem'd the song to beC
But sweeter sounded in my earQ
'Will Dolly still be true to me '-
-
From the rude Dock my skirt had sweptR
A fringe of clinging burrs so greenS
Like them our hearts still closer creptR
And hook'd a thousand holds unseenS
-
High o'er the road each branching boughT
Its globes of silent dew had shedU
And on the pure wash'd sand belowN
The dimpling drops around had spreadU
-
The sweet brier op'd its pink ey'd roseV
And gave its fragrance to the galeW
Though modest flow'rs may sweets discloseV
More sweet was HENRY'S earnest taleW
-
He seem'd methought on that dear mornK
To pour out all his heart to meC
As if the separation borneK
The coming hours would joyless beC
-
A bank rose high beside the wayH
And full against the Morning SunX
Of heay'nly blue there Violets gayH
His hand invited one byY
-
The posy with a smile he gaveZ
I saw his meaning in his eyesA2
The withered treasure still I haveB2
My bosom holds the fragrant prizeA2
-
With his last kiss he would have vow'dM
But blessings crouding forc'd their wayH
Then mounted he his Courser proudM
His time elaps'd he could not stayH
-
Then first I felt the parting pangC2
Sure the worst pang the Lover feelsD2
His Horse unruly from me sprangC2
The pebbles flew beneath his heelsD2
-
Then down the road his vigour triedE2
His rider gazing gazing stillF2
'My dearest I'll be true ' he criedE2
And if he lives I'm sure he willF2
-
Then haste ye hours haste Eve and MornK
Yet strew your blessings round my homeG2
Ere Winter's blasts shall strip the thornK
My promis'd joy my love will comeH2
