The most important thing we've learnedA
So far as children are concernedA
Is never NEVER NEVER letB
Them near your television setB
Or better still just don't installC
The idiotic thing at allC
In almost every house we've beenD
We've watched them gaping at the screenE
They loll and slop and lounge aboutF
And stare until their eyes pop outF
Last week in someone's place we sawG
A dozen eyeballs on the floorH
They sit and stare and stare and sitI
Until they're hypnotised by itI
Until they're absolutely drunkJ
With all that shocking ghastly junkJ
Oh yes we know it keeps them stillK
They don't climb out the window sillK
They never fight or kick or punchL
They leave you free to cook the lunchL
And wash the dishes in the sinkM
But did you ever stop to thinkM
To wonder just exactly whatN
This does to your beloved totO
IT ROTS THE SENSE IN THE HEADP
IT KILLS IMAGINATION DEADP
IT CLOGS AND CLUTTERS UP THE MINDQ
IT MAKES A CHILD SO DULL AND BLINDQ
HE CAN NO LONGER UNDERSTANDR
A FANTASY A FAIRYLANDR
HIS BRAIN BECOMES AS SOFT AS CHEESES
HIS POWERS OF THINKING RUST AND FREEZES
HE CANNOT THINK HE ONLY SEESS
'All right ' you'll cry 'All right ' you'll sayT
'But if we take the set awayT
What shall we do to entertainU
Our darling children Please explain 'V
We'll answer this by asking youW
'What used the darling ones to doW
'How used they keep themselves contentedX
Before this monster was invented 'V
Have you forgotten Don't you knowY
We'll say it very loud and slowY
THEY USED TO READ They'd READ and READP
AND READ and READ and then proceedZ
To READ some more Great Scott GadzooksT
One half their lives was reading booksT
The nursery shelves held books galoreH
Books cluttered up the nursery floorH
And in the bedroom by the bedP
More books were waiting to be readP
Such wondrous fine fantastic talesT
Of dragons gypsies queens and whalesT
And treasure isles and distant shoresT
Where smugglers rowed with muffled oarsT
And pirates wearing purple pantsT
And sailing ships and elephantsT
And cannibals crouching 'round the potO
Stirring away at something hotO
It smells so good what can it beA2
Good gracious it's PenelopeA2
The younger ones had Beatrix PotterB2
With Mr Tod the dirty rotterB2
And Squirrel Nutkin Pigling BlandR
And Mrs Tiggy Winkle andC2
Just How The Camel Got His HumpD2
And How the Monkey Lost His RumpD2
And Mr Toad and bless my soulE2
There's Mr Rat and Mr MoleE2
Oh books what books they used to knowY
Those children living long agoY
So please oh please we beg we prayT
Go throw your TV set awayT
And in its place you can installC
A lovely bookshelf on the wallC
Then fill the shelves with lots of booksT
Ignoring all the dirty looksT
The screams and yells the bites and kicksT
And children hitting you with sticksT
Fear not because we promise youW
That in about a week or twoW
Of having nothing else to doW
They'll now begin to feel the needZ
Of having something to readP
And once they start oh boy oh boyF2
You watch the slowly growing joyF2
That fills their hearts They'll grow so keenE
They'll wonder what they'd ever seenE
In that ridiculous machineE
That nauseating foul uncleanE
Repulsive television screenE
And later each and every kidG2
Will love you more for what you didG2
