Thus free our social time from morning flowsA
Till rising shades attempt the day to closeB
Thus my new friend Behold the light's decayC
Back to yon city let me point thy wayC
South west behind yon hill the slooping sunD
To ocean's verge his fluent course has runD
His parting eyes a wat'ry radiance shedE
Glance through the vale and tip the mountain's headE
To which oppos'd the shad'wy gulfs belowF
Beauteous reflect the party colour'd snowF
-
-
Now dance the stars where Vesper leads the wayC
Yet all faint glimm'ring with remains of dayC
Orient the Queen of Night emits her dawnG
And throws unseen her mantle o'er the lawnG
Up the blue steep her crimson orb now shinesH
Now on the mountain top her arm reclinesH
In a red crescent seen her zone now gleamsI
Like Venus quiv'ring in reflecting streamsI
Yet red'ning yet round burning up the airJ
From the white cliff her feet slow rising glareJ
See flames condens'd now vary her attireK
Her face a broad circumference of fireK
Dark firs seem kindled in nocturnal blazeL
Thro' ranks of pines her broken lustre playsL
Here glares there brown projecting shade bestowsA
And glitt'ring sports upon the spangled snowsA
-
-
Now silver turn her beams Yon den they gainM
The big rouz'd lion shakes his brindled mainM
Fierce fleet gaunt monsters all prepar'd for goreN
Rend woods vales rocks with wide resounding roarN
O dire presage But fear not thou my friendO
Our steps the guardians of the just attendO
Homeward I'll wait thee on and now surveyC
How men and spirits chace the night awayC
Yon nymps and swains in am'rous mirth advanceP
To breathing music moves the circling danceP
Here the bold youth in deeds advent'rous glowF
Skimming in rapid sleds the crackling snowF
Not when Tydides won the fun'ral raceQ
Shot his light car along in swifter paceQ
Here the glaz'd way with iron feet they dareJ
And glide well pois'd like Mercuries in airJ
There crowds with stable tread and levell'd eyeR
Lift and dismiss the quoits that whirling flyR
With force superior not with skill so trueS
The pond'rous disk from Roman sinews flewS
Where neighb'ring hills some cloudy sheet sustainM
Freez'd o'er the nether vale a pensive plainM
Cross the roof'd hollow rolls the massy roundT
The crack'd ice rattles and the rocks resoundT
Censures disputes and laughs alternate riseU
And deaf'ning clangor thunders up the skiesU
-
-
Thus amid crowded images sereneV
From hour to hour we pass'd from scene to sceneV
Fast wore the night Full long we pac'd our wayC
Vain steps the city yet far distant layC
While thus the Hermit ere my wonder spokeW
Methought with new amusement silence brokeW
Yon amber hu'd cascade which fleecy fliesU
Thro' rocks and strays along the trackless skiesU
To frolic fairies marks the mazy ringX
Forth to the dance from little cells they springX
Measur'd to pipe or harp and next they standY
Marshall'd beneath the moon a radiant bandY
In frost work now delight the sportive kindZ
Now court wild Fancy in the whistling windZ
-
-
Hark the funereal bell's deep sounding tollA2
To bliss from mis'ry calls some righteous soulA2
Just freed from life like swift ascending fireK
Glorious it mounts and gleams from yonder spireB2
Light claps its wings It views with pitying sightC2
The friendly mourner pay the pious riteC2
The plume high wrought that black'ning nods in airJ
The slow pac'd weeping pomp the solemn pray'rD2
The decent tomb the verse that Sorrow givesE2
Where to remembrance sweet fair Virtue livesE2
-
-
Now to mid heav'n the whiten'd moon inclinesH
And shades contract mark'd out in clearer linesH
With noiseless gloom the plains are delug'd o'erK
See from the north what streaming meteors pourN
Beneath Bo tes springs the radiant trainM
And quiver thro' the axle of his wainM
O'er altars thus impainted we beholdF2
Half circling glories shoot in rays of goldF2
Cross either swift elance the vivid firesG2
As swift again each pointed flame retiresH2
In fancy's eye encount'ring armies glareJ
And sanguine ensigns wave unfurl'd in airJ
Hence the weak vulgar deem impending fateI2
A monarch ruin'd or unpeopled stateI2
Thus comets dreadful visitants ariseU
To them wild omens science to the wiseU
These mark the comet to the sun inclineJ2
While deep red flames around its center shineJ2
While its fierce rear a winding trail displaysL
And lights all ether with the sweepy blazeL
Or when compell'd it flies the torrid zoneK2
And shoots by worlds unnumber'd and unknownK2
By worlds whose people all aghast with fearL2
May view that minister of vengeance nearL2
'Till now the transient glow remote and lostM2
Decays and darkens 'mid involving frostM2
Or when it sun ward drinks rich beams againN2
And burns imperious on th' etherial plainM
The learn'd one curious eyes it from afarD2
Sparkling thro' night a new illustrious starD2
-
-
The moon descending saw us now pursueS
The various talk the city near in viewS
Here from still life he cries avert thy sightC2
And mark what deeds adorn or shame the nightC2
But heedful each immodest prospect flyR
Where decency forbids enquiry's eyeR
Man were not man without love's wanton fireK
But reason's glory is to quell desireK
What are thy fruits O Lust Short blessings boughtO2
With long remorse the seed of bitter thoughtP2
Perhaps some babe to dire diseases bornQ2
Doom'd for another's crimes thro' life to mournQ2
Or murder'd to preserve a mother's fameR2
Or cast obscure the child of want and shameR2
False pride What vices on our conduct stealS2
From the world's eye one frailty to concealS2
Ye cruel mothers Soft those words commandY
So near shall cruelty and mother standY
Can the dove's bosom snakey venom drawT2
Can its foot sharpen like the vulture's clawT2
Can the fond goat or tender fleecy damU2
Howl like the wolf to tear the kid or lambU2
Yes there are mothers There I fear'd his aimR2
And conscious trembled at the coming nameR2
Then with a sigh his issuing words oppos'dV2
Straight with a falling tear the speech he clos'dV2
That tenderness which ties of blood denyR
Nature repaid me from a stranger's eyeR
Pale grew my cheeks But now to gen'ral viewsW2
Our converse turns which thus my friend renewsW2
-
-
Yon mansion made by beaming tapers gayC
Drowns the dim night and counterfeits the dayC
From lumin'd windows glancing on the eyeR
Around athwart the frisking shadows flyR
There midnight riot spreads illusive joysX2
And fortune health and dearer time destroysX2
Soon death's dark agent to luxuriant easeY2
Shall wake sharp warnings in some fierce diseaseY2
-
-
O man thy fabric's like a well form'd stateI2
Thy thoughts first rank'd were sure design'd the greatI2
Passions plebeians are which faction raiseL
Wine like pour'd oil excites the raging blazeL
Then giddy anarchy's rude triumphs riseU
Then sov'reign reason from her empire fliesU
That ruler once depos'd wisdom and witZ2
To noise and folly place and pow'r submitZ2
Like a frail bark thy weaken'd mind is tostZ2
Unsteer'd unbalanc'd till its wealth is lostZ2
-
-
The miser spirit eyes the spendthrift heirJ
And mourns too late effects of sordid careJ
His treasures fly to cloy each fawning slaveA3
Yet grudge a stone to dignify his graveA3
For this low thoughted craft his life employ'dZ2
For this tho' wealthy he no wealth enjoy'dZ2
For this he grip'd the poor and alms deny'dZ2
Unfriended liv'd and unlamented diedZ2
Yet smile griev'd shade when that unprosp'rous storeN
Fast lessens when gay hours return no moreN
Smile at thy heir beholding in his fallB3
Men once oblig'd like him ungrateful allB3
Then thought inspiring woe his heart shall mendZ2
And prove his only wise unflatt'ring friendZ2
-
-
Folly exhibits thus unmanly sportZ2
While plotting mischief keeps reserv'd her courtZ2
Lo from that mount in blasting sulphur brokeW
Stream flames voluminous enwrapp'd with smokeW
In chariot shape they whirl up yonder tow'rD2
Lean on its brow and like destruction low'rD2
From the black depth a fiery legion springsC3
Each bold bad spectre claps her sounR
