The cowbells wander through the woodsA
'Neath arching boughs a stream slips byB
In all the ferny solitudeC
A chipmunk and a butterflyB
Are all that is and you and IB
-
This summer day with all its flowersD
With all its green and gold and blueE
Just for a little while is oursD
Just for a little I and youE
Till the stars rise and bring the dewE
-
One perfect day to us is givenF
Tomorrow all the aching yearsG
This is our last short day in heavenF
The last of all our kisses nearsG
Then life too arid even for tearsH
-
Here as the day ends we two endI
Two that were one we said for everJ
We had Eternity to spendI
And laughed for joy to know that neverJ
Two so divinely one could severJ
-
A year ago how rich we seemedK
Like piles of gold our kisses layL
Enough to last our lives we dreamedK
And lives to come we used to sayL
Yet are we at the last to dayL
-
The last I say yet scarce believeM
What all my heart is black with knowingN
Doomed I yet watch for some reprieveM
But know too well that love is goingN
As sure as yonder stream is flowingN
-
Look round us how the hot sun burnsO
In plots of glory here and thereP
Pouring its gold among the fernsO
So burned my lips upon your hairP
So rained our kisses love last yearQ
-
We saw not where a shadow loomedR
That from its first auroral hourJ
Our happy paradise fore doomedR
A Fate within whose icy powerJ
Love blooms as helpless as a flowerJ
-
Its shadow by the dial standsS
The golden moments shudder pastT
Soon shall he smite apart our handsS
In vain we hold each other fastT
And the last kiss must come at lastT
-
The last then be it charged with fireJ
With sacred passion wild and whiteU
With such a glory of desireJ
We two shall vanish in its lightU
And find each other in God's sightU
