Black Sheep Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL

FROM their folded mates they wander farA
Their ways seem harsh and wildB
They follow the beck of a baleful starA
Their paths are dream beguiledB
-
Yet haply they sought but a wider rangeC
Some loftier mountain slopeD
And little recked of the country strangeC
Beyond the gates of hopeD
-
And haply a bell with a luring callE
Summoned their feet to treadF
Midst the cruel rocks where the deep pitfallE
And the lurking snare are spreadF
-
Maybe in spite of their tameless daysG
Of outcast libertyH
They re sick at heart for the homely waysG
Where their gathered brothers beH
-
And oft at night when the plains fall darkI
And the hills loom large and dimJ
For the shepherd s voice they mutely harkI
And their souls go out to himJ
-
Meanwhile Black sheep black sheep we cryK
Safe in the inner foldL
And maybe they hear and wonder whyK
And marvel out in the coldL
