The Song Of The Unsuccessful Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKM NONO PQPQ RSRS TUVU

We are the toilers from whom God barredA
The gifts that are good to holdB
We meant full well and we tried full hardA
And our failures were manifoldB
-
And we are the clan of those whose kinC
Were a millstone dragging them downD
Yea we had to sweat for our brother's sinC
And lose the victor's crownD
-
The seeming able who all but scoredE
From their teeming tribe we comeF
What was there wrong with us O LordE
That our lives were dark and dumbF
-
The men ten talented who stillG
Strangely missed of the goalH
Of them we are it seems Thy willG
To harrow some in soulH
-
We are the sinners too whose lustI
Conquered the higher claimsJ
We sat us prone in the common dustI
And played at the devil's gamesJ
-
We are the hard luck folk who stroveK
Zealously but in vainL
We lost and lost while our comrades throveK
And still we lost againM
-
We are the doubles of those whose wayN
Was festal with fruits and flowersO
Body and brain we were sound as theyN
But the prizes were not oursO
-
A mighty army our full ranks makeP
We shake the graves as we goQ
The sudden stroke and the slow heartbreakP
They both have brought us lowQ
-
And while we are laying life's sword asideR
Spent and dishonored and sadS
Our epitaph this when once we have diedR
The weak lie here and the badS
-
We wonder if this can be really the closeT
Life's fever cooled by death's tranceU
And we cry though it seem to our dearest of foesV
God give us another chanceU
