The Elementary Scene Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDE FGHIJ KLMLN OPQRS D

Looking back in my mind I can seeA
The white sun like a tin plateB
Over the wooden turning of the weedsC
The street jerking a wet swingD
To end by the wall the children sangE
-
The thin grass by the girls' doorF
Trodden on straggling yellow and rottenG
And the gaunt field with its one tied cowH
The dead land waking sadly to my lifeI
Stir and curl deeper in the eyes of timeJ
-
The rotting pumpkin under the stairsK
Bundled with switches and the cold ashesL
Still holds for me in its unwavering eyesM
The stinking shapes of cranes and witchesL
Their path slanting down the pumpkin's skyN
-
Its stars beckon through the frost like cottagesO
Homes of the Bear the Hunter of that absent starP
The dark where the flushed child struggles into sleepQ
Till leaning a lifetime to the comforterR
I float above the small limbs like their dreamS
-
I I the future that mends everythingD
