It sat between my husband and my childrenA
A place was set for it a plate of greensB
It had been there I had seen itC
But not somehow but this was like a dreamD
Not seen it so that I knew I saw itC
It was as if I could not know I saw itC
Because I had never once in all my lifeE
Not seen it It was an elandF
An eland That is why the childrenA
Would ask my husband for a joke at ChristmasG
Father is it Donner He would say No BlitzenA
It had been there always Now we put silverH
At its place at meals fed it the same foodI
We ourselves ate and said nothing Many timesJ
When it breathed heavily when it had triedK
A long useless time to speak and reached to meL
So that I touched it of a different sizeM
And order of being like the live hard sideK
Of a horse s neck when you pat the horseN
And looked with its great melting tearless eyesM
Fringed with a few coarse wire like lashesO
Into my eyes and whispered to meL
So that my eyes turned backward in their socketsP
And they said nothingQ
many timesJ
I have known when they said nothingQ
That it did not exist If they had heardR
They could not have been silent And yet they heardR
Heard many times what I have spokenA
When it could no longer speak but only breatheS
When I could no longer speak but only breatheS
-
-
And after some years the others cameT
And took it from me it was ill they told meL
And cured it they wrote me my whole cityL
Sent me cards lilac branches mourningQ
As I had mournedU
and I was standingQ
By a grave in flowers by dyed rolls of turfV
And a canvas marquee the last brown of earthW
-
-
It is overH
It is over so long that I begin to thinkX
That it did not exist that I have neverH
And my son says one morning from the paperH
An eland Look an elandF
It was soY
-
-
Today in a German dictionary I saw elendF
And the heart in my breast turned over it wasZ
-
-
It was a word one translates wretchedF
-
-
It is as if someone remembered sayingQ
This is an antimacassar that I grew from seedF
And this were trueA2
And trulyL
One could not wish for anything more strangeB2
For anything more And yet it wasn t interestingQ
It was worse than impossible it was a jokeC2
-
-
And yet when it was I wasZ
Even to think that I once thoughtF
That I could see it to feel the sweatF
Like needles at my hair roots I am blindF
-
-
It was not even a joke not even a jokeC2
Yet how can I believe it Or believe that ID2
Owned it a husband children Is my voice the voiceE2
Of that skin of being of what owns is ownedF
In honor or dishonor that is borne and bearsF2
Or of that raw thing the being inside itF
That has neither a wife a husband nor a childF
But goes at last as naked from this worldF
As it was born into itF
-
-
And the eland comes and grazes on its graveG2
-
-
This is senselessG
Shall I make sense or shall I tell the truthH2
Choose either I cannot do bothI2
-
-
I tell myself that And yet it is not soY
And what I say afterwards will not be soY
To be at all is to be wrongJ2
Being is being oldF
And saying almost comfortably across a tableK2
FromL2
from what I don t knowY
in a voiceE2
Rich with a kind of longing satisfactionA
To own an eland That s what I call lifeE
