Losses Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJAK LBMNO APPQRSTUV W XYX

It was not dying everybody diedA
It was not dying we had died beforeB
In the routine crashes and our fieldsC
Called up the papers wrote home to our folksD
And the rates rose all because of usE
We died on the wrong page of the almanacF
Scattered on mountains fifty miles awayG
Diving on haystacks fighting with a friendH
We blazed up on the lines we never sawI
We died like aunts or pets or foreignersJ
When we left high school nothing else had diedA
For us to figure we had died likeK
-
In our new planes with our new crews we bombedL
The ranges by the desert or the shoreB
Fired at towed targets waited for our scoresM
And turned into replacements and woke upN
One morning over England operationalO
-
It wasn't different but if we diedA
It was not an accident but a mistakeP
But an easy one for anyone to makeP
We read our mail and counted up our missionsQ
In bombers named for girls we burnedR
The cities we had learned about in schoolS
Till our lives wore out our bodies lay amongT
The people we had killed and never seenU
When we lasted long enough they gave us medalsV
When we died they said 'Our casualties were low '-
-
They said 'Here are the maps' we burned the citiesW
-
It was not dying no not ever dyingX
But the night I died I dreamed that I was deadY
And the cities said to me 'Why are you dyingX
We are satisfied if you are but why did I die '-
