You ask why I am sad to dayA
I have no cares no griefs you sayA
Ah yes 't is true I have no griefB
But is there not the falling leafB
-
The bare tree there is mourning leftC
With all of autumn's gray bereftC
It is not what has happened meD
Think of the bare dismantled treeD
-
The birds go South along the skyE
I hear their lingering long good byeE
Who goes reluctant from my breastF
And yet the lone and wind swept nestF
-
The mourning pale flowered hearse goes byE
Why does a tear come to my eyeE
Is it the March rain blowing wildG
I have no dead I know no childG
-
I am no widow by the bierH
Of him I held supremely dearI
I have not seen the choicest oneJ
Sink down as sinks the westering sunJ
-
Faith unto faith have I beheldG
For me few solemn notes have swelledG
Love bekoned me out to the dawnK
And happily I followed onL
-
And yet my heart goes out to themM
Whose sorrow is their diademM
The falling leaf the crying birdG
The voice to be all lost unheardG
-
Not mine not mine and yet too muchN
The thrilling power of human touchN
While all the world looks on and scornsO
I wear another's crown of thornsO
-
Count me a priest who understandsP
The glorious pain of nail pierced handsP
Count me a comrade of the thiefB
Hot driven into late beliefB
-
Oh mother's tear oh father's sighE
Oh mourning sweetheart's last good byeE
I yet have known no mourning saveQ
Beside some brother's brother's graveQ
