A youth went faring up and downA
Alack and well a dayB
He fared him to the market townA
Alack and well a dayB
And there he met a maiden fairC
With hazel eyes and auburn hairC
His heart went from him then and thereC
Alack and well a dayB
-
She posies sold right merrilyD
Alack and well a dayB
But not a flower was fair as sheD
Alack and well a dayB
He bought a rose and sighed a sighE
Ah dearest maiden would that IE
Might dare the seller too to buyE
Alack and well a dayB
-
She tossed her head the coy coquetteB
Alack and well a dayB
I'm not sir in the market yetB
Alack and well a dayB
Your love must cool upon a shelfF
Tho' much I sell for gold and pelfF
I 'm yet too young to sell myselfF
Alack and well a dayB
-
The youth was filled with sorrow soreG
Alack and well a dayB
And looked he at the maid once moreG
Alack and well a dayB
Then loud he cried Fair maiden ifF
Too young to sell now as I liveF
You're not too young yourself to giveF
Alack and well a dayB
-
The little maid cast down her eyesH
Alack and well a dayB
And many a flush began to riseH
Alack and well a dayB
Why since you are so bold she saidB
I doubt not you are highly bredB
So take me and the twain were wedB
Alack and well a dayB
