I stood by the shore at the death of dayA
As the sun sank flaming redB
And the face of the waters that spread awayA
Was as gray as the face of the deadB
-
And I heard the cry of the wanton seaC
And the moan of the wailing windD
For love's sweet pain in his heart had heC
But the gray old sea had sinnedE
-
The wind was young and the sea was oldF
But their cries went up togetherG
The wind was warm and the sea was coldF
For age makes wintry weatherG
-
So they cried aloud and they wept amainH
Till the sky grew dark to hear itI
And out of its folds crept the misty rainH
In its shroud like a troubled spiritJ
-
For the wind was wild with a hopeless loveK
And the sea was sad at heartL
At many a crime that he wot ofK
Wherein he had played his partL
-
He thought of the gallant ships gone downH
By the will of his wicked wavesM
And he thought how the church yard in the townH
Held the sea made widows' gravesM
-
The wild wind thought of the love he had leftN
Afar in an Eastern landO
And he longed as long the much bereftN
For the touch of her perfumed handO
-
In his winding wail and his deep heaved sighP
His aching grief found ventQ
While the sea looked up at the bending skyP
And murmured I repentQ
-
But e'en as he spoke a ship came byP
That bravely ploughed the mainH
And a light came into the sea's green eyeP
And his heart grew hard againH
-
Then he spoke to the wind Friend seest thou notR
Yon vessel is eastward boundS
Pray speed with it to the happy spotR
Where thy loved one may be foundS
-
And the wind rose up in a dear delightT
And after the good ship spedB
But the crafty sea by his wicked mightT
Kept the vessel ever aheadB
-
Till the wind grew fierce in his despairU
And white on the brow and lipV
He tore his garments and tore his hairU
And fell on the flying shipV
-
And the ship went down for a rock was thereU
And the sailless sea loomed blackW
While burdened again with dole and careU
The wind came moaning backW
-
And still he moans from his bosom hotR
Where his raging grief lies pentQ
And ever when the ships come notR
The sea says I repentQ
