The Veteran Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EEFFGGHH IIJJGGGG KKLLGGMN OOPPQQGG

Underneath the autumn skyA
Haltingly the lines go byA
Ah would steps were blithe and gayB
As when first they marched awayB
Smile on lip and curl on browC
Only white faced gray beards nowC
Standing on life's outer vergeD
E'en the marches sound a dirgeD
-
Blow you bugles play you fifeE
Rattle drums for dearest lifeE
Let the flags wave freely soF
As the marching legions goF
Shout hurrah and laugh and jestG
This is memory at its bestG
Did you notice at your quipH
That old comrade's quivering lipH
-
Ah I see them as they comeI
Stumbling with the rumbling drumI
But a sight more sad to meJ
E'en than these ranks could beJ
Was that one with cane upraisedG
Who stood by and gazed and gazedG
Trembling solemn lips compressedG
Longing to be with the restG
-
Did he dream of old alarmsK
As he stood presented armsK
Did he think of field and campL
And the unremitting trampL
Mile on mile the lonely guardG
When he kept his midnight wardG
Did he dream of wounds and scarsM
In that bitter war of warsN
-
What of that He stood and standsO
In my memory trembling handsO
Whitened beard and cane and allP
As if waiting for the callP
Once again To arms my sonsQ
And his ears hear far off gunsQ
Roll of cannon and the treadG
Of the legions of the DeadG
