Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FGHG IJKJ LMKM KNAN ADND OPLPAs a quiet little seedling | A |
Lay within its darksome bed | B |
To itself it fell a talking | A |
And this is what it said | B |
- | |
I am not so very robust | C |
But I 'll do the best I can | D |
And the seedling from that moment | E |
Its work of life began | D |
- | |
So it pushed a little leaflet | F |
Up into the light of day | G |
To examine the surroundings | H |
And show the rest the way | G |
- | |
The leaflet liked the prospect | I |
So it called its brother Stem | J |
Then two other leaflets heard it | K |
And quickly followed them | J |
- | |
To be sure the haste and hurry | L |
Made the seedling sweat and pant | M |
But almost before it knew it | K |
It found itself a plant | M |
- | |
The sunshine poured upon it | K |
And the clouds they gave a shower | N |
And the little plant kept growing | A |
Till it found itself a flower | N |
- | |
Little folks be like the seedling | A |
Always do the best you can | D |
Every child must share life's labor | N |
Just as well as every man | D |
- | |
And the sun and showers will help you | O |
Through the lonesome struggling hours | P |
Till you raise to light and beauty | L |
Virtue's fair unfading flowers | P |
