The lake's dark breastA
Is all unrestA
It heaves with a sob and a sighB
Like a tremulous birdC
From its slumber stirredC
The moon is a tilt in the skyB
-
From the silent deepD
The waters sweepD
But faint on the cold white stonesE
And the wavelets flyB
With a plaintive cryB
O'er the old earth's bare bleak bonesE
-
And the spray upspringsE
On its ghost white wingsE
And tosses a kiss at the starsE
While a water spriteF
In sea pearls dightF
Hums a sea hymn's solemn barsE
-
Far out in the nightF
On the wavering sightF
I see a dark hull loomG
And its light on highB
Like a Cyclops' eyeB
Shines out through the mist and gloomG
-
Now the winds well upH
From the earth's deep cupH
And fall on the sea and shoreI
And against the pierJ
The waters rearJ
And break with a sullen roarI
-
Up comes the galeK
And the mist wrought veilK
Gives way to the lightning's glareL
And the cloud drifts fallM
A sombre pallN
O'er water earth and airL
-
The storm king fliesE
His whip he pliesE
And bellows down the windF
The lightning rashO
With blinding flashO
Comes pricking on behindF
-
Rise waters riseE
And taunt the skiesE
With your swift flitting formP
Sweep wild winds sweepD
And tear the deepD
To atoms in the stormP
-
And the waters leaptF
And the wild winds sweptF
And blew out the moon in the skyB
And I laughed with gleeQ
It was joy to meQ
As the storm went raging byB
