The Gourd Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEAE FGHGFIAI GJAJKLML NDODPLAL QMHMHLAL

In the heavy earth the minerA
Toiled and laboured day by dayB
Wrenching from the miser mountainC
Brilliant treasure where it layB
And the artist worn and wearyD
Wrought with labour manifoldE
That the king might drink his nectarA
From a goblet made of goldE
-
On the prince's groaning tableF
Mid the silver gleaming brightG
Mirroring the happy facesH
Giving back the flaming lightG
Shine the cups of priceless crystalF
Chased with many a lovely lineI
Glowing now with warmer colourA
Crimsoned by the ruby wineI
-
In a valley sweet with sunlightG
Fertile with the dew and rainJ
Without miner's daily labourA
Without artist's nightly painJ
There there grows the cup I drink fromK
Summer's sweetness in it storedL
And my lips pronounce a blessingM
As they touch an old brown gourdL
-
Why the miracle at CanaN
In the land of GalileeD
Tho' it puzzles all the scholarsO
Is no longer strange to meD
For the poorest and the humblestP
Could a priceless wine affordL
If they 'd only dip up waterA
With a sunlight seasoned gourdL
-
So a health to my old comradeQ
And a song of praise to singM
When he rests inviting kissesH
In his place beside the springM
Give the king his golden gobletsH
Give the prince his crystal hoardL
But for me the sparkling waterA
From a brown and brimming gourdL
