Cover him over with daisies whiteA
And eke with the poppies redB
Sit with me here by his couch to nightA
For the First Born Love is deadB
-
Poor little fellow he seemed so fairC
As he lay in my jealous armsD
Silent and cold he is lying thereC
Stripped of his darling charmsD
-
Lusty and strong he had grown forsoothE
Sweet with an infinite graceF
Proud in the force of his conquering youthE
Laughter alight in his faceF
-
Oh but the blast it was cruel and keenG
And ah but the chill it was rareC
The look of the winter kissed flow'r you've seenG
When meadows and fields were bareC
-
Can you not wake from this white cold sleepH
And speak to me once againI
True that your slumber is deep so deepH
But deeper by far is my painJ
-
Cover him over with daisies whiteA
And eke with the poppies redB
Sit with me here by his couch to nightA
For the First Born Love is deadB
