The Crisis Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCD EFEFGG DHDHII JKJKLM

A man of low degree was sore oppressedA
Fate held him under iron handed swayB
And ever those who saw him thus distressedA
Would bid him bend his stubborn will and prayB
But he strong in himself and obdurateC
Waged prayerless on his losing fight with FateD
-
Friends gave his proffered hand their coldest claspE
Or took it not at all and PovertyF
That bruised his body with relentless graspE
Grinned taunting when he struggled to be freeF
But though with helpless hands he beat the airG
His need extreme yet found no voice in prayerG
-
Then he prevailed and forthwith snobbish FateD
Like some whipped cur came fawning at his feetH
Those who had scorned forgave and called him greatD
His friends found out that friendship still was sweetH
But he once obdurate now bowed his headI
In prayer and trembling with its import saidI
-
Mere human strength may stand ill fortune's frownJ
So I prevailed for human strength was mineK
But from the killing pow'r of great renownJ
Naught may protect me save a strength divineK
Help me O Lord in this my trembling causeL
I scorn men's curses but I dread applauseM
