Sympathy Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAAAAA CACCACC DEDDEAA

I know what the caged bird feels alasA
When the sun is bright on the upland slopesB
When the wind stirs soft through the springing grassA
And the river flows like a stream of glassA
When the first bird sings and the first bud opesA
And the faint perfume from its chalice stealsA
I know what the caged bird feelsA
-
I know why the caged bird beats his wingC
Till its blood is red on the cruel barsA
For he must fly back to his perch and clingC
When he fain would be on the bough a swingC
And a pain still throbs in the old old scarsA
And they pulse again with a keener stingC
I know why he beats his wingC
-
I know why the caged bird sings ah meD
When his wing is bruised and his bosom soreE
When he beats his bars and he would be freeD
It is not a carol of joy or gleeD
But a prayer that he sends from his heart's deep coreE
But a plea that upward to Heaven he flingsA
I know why the caged bird singsA
