When you and I were young the daysA
Were filled with scent of pink and roseB
And full of joy from dawn till closeC
From morning's mist till evening's hazeA
And when the robin sung his songD
The verdant woodland ways alongD
We whistled louder than he sungE
And school was joy and work was sportF
For which the hours were all too shortF
When you and I were young my boyG
When you and I were youngE
-
When you and I were young the woodsH
Brimmed bravely o'er with every joyG
To charm the happy hearted boyG
The quail turned out her timid broodsH
The prickly copse a hostess fineI
Held high black cups of harmless wineI
And low the laden grape vine swungE
With beads of night kissed amethystJ
Where buzzing lovers held their trystJ
When you and I were young my boyG
When you and I were youngE
-
When you and I were young the coolK
And fresh wind fanned our fevered browsH
When tumbling o'er the scented mowsH
Or stripping by the dimpling poolK
Sedge fringed about its shimmering faceH
Save where we 'd worn an ent'ring placeH
How with our shouts the calm banks rungE
How flashed the spray as we plunged inL
Pure gems that never caused a sinL
When you and I were young my boyG
When you and I were youngE
-
When you and I were young we heardM
All sounds of Nature with delightN
The whirr of wing in sudden flightN
The chirping of the baby birdM
The columbine's red bells were rungE
The locust's vested chorus sungE
While every wind his zithern strungE
To high and holy sounding keysH
And played sonatas in the treesH
When you and I were young my boyG
When you and I were youngE
-
When you and I were young we knewO
To shout and laugh to work and playP
And night was partner to the dayP
In all our joys So swift time flewO
On silent wings that ere we wistJ
The fleeting years had fled unmissedJ
And from our hearts this cry was wrungE
To fill with fond regret and tearsH
The days of our remaining yearsH
When you and I were young my boyG
When you and I were youngE
