Prometheus Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBC DEED FGGF HIIH BJJB

Prometheus stole from Heaven the sacred fireA
And swept to earth with it o'er land and seaB
He lit the vestal flames of poesyB
Content for this to brave celestial ireC
-
Wroth were the gods and with eternal hateD
Pursued the fearless one who ravished HeavenE
That earth might hold in fee the perfect leavenE
To lift men's souls above their low estateD
-
But judge you now when poets wield the penF
Think you not well the wrong has been repairedG
'Twas all in vain that ill Prometheus faredG
The fire has been returned to Heaven againF
-
We have no singers like the ones whose noteH
Gave challenge to the noblest warbler's songI
We have no voice so mellow sweet and strongI
As that which broke from Shelley's golden throatH
-
The measure of our songs is our desiresB
We tinkle where old poets used to stormJ
We lack their substance tho' we keep their formJ
We strum our banjo strings and call them lyresB
