Ode For Memorial Day Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDFCCCC GHGHIJIJKDKD KLKLMNMNCMCM

Done are the toils and the wearisome marchesA
Done is the summons of bugle and drumB
Softly and sweetly the sky over archesC
Shelt'ring a land where Rebellion is dumbB
Dark were the days of the country's derangementD
Sad were the hours when the conflict was onE
But through the gloom of fraternal estrangementD
God sent his light and we welcome the dawnF
O'er the expanse of our mighty dominionsC
Sweeping away to the uttermost partsC
Peace the wide flying on untiring pinionsC
Bringeth her message of joy to our heartsC
-
Ah but this joy which our minds cannot measureG
What did it cost for our fathers to gainH
Bought at the price of the heart's dearest treasureG
Born out of travail and sorrow and painH
Born in the battle where fleet Death was flyingI
Slaying with sabre stroke bloody and fellJ
Born where the heroes and martyrs were dyingI
Torn by the fury of bullet and shellJ
Ah but the day is past silent the rattleK
And the confusion that followed the fightD
Peace to the heroes who died in the battleK
Martyrs to truth and the crowning of RightD
-
Out of the blood of a conflict fraternalK
Out of the dust and the dimness of deathL
Burst into blossoms of glory eternalK
Flowers that sweeten the world with their breathL
Flowers of charity peace and devotionM
Bloom in the hearts that are empty of strifeN
Love that is boundless and broad as the oceanM
Leaps into beauty and fulness of lifeN
So with the singing of paeans and choralsC
And with the flag flashing high in the sunM
Place on the graves of our heroes the laurelsC
Which their unfaltering valor has wonM
