It's all a farce these tales they tellA
About the breezes sighingB
And moans astir o'er field and dellA
Because the year is dyingB
-
Such principles are most absurdC
I care not who first taught 'emD
There's nothing known to beast or birdC
To make a solemn autumnD
-
In solemn times when grief holds swayE
With countenance distressingB
You'll note the more of black and grayE
Will then be used in dressingB
-
Now purple tints are all aroundF
The sky is blue and mellowG
And e'en the grasses turn the groundF
From modest green to yellowG
-
The seed burrs all with laughter crackH
On featherweed and jimsonD
And leaves that should be dressed in blackH
Are all decked out in crimsonD
-
A butterfly goes winging byI
A singing bird comes afterJ
And Nature all from earth to skyI
Is bubbling o'er with laughterJ
-
The ripples wimple on the rillsK
Like sparkling little lassesK
The sunlight runs along the hillsK
And laughs among the grassesK
-
The earth is just so full of funD
It really can't contain itL
And streams of mirth so freely runD
The heavens seem to rain itL
-
Don't talk to me of solemn daysK
In autumn's time of splendorJ
Because the sun shows fewer raysK
And these grow slant and slenderJ
-
Why it's the climax of the yearM
The highest time of livingB
Till naturally its bursting cheerM
Just melts into thanksgivingB
